OVA
Description
Keima Katsuragi is the main protagonist of the story, a seventeen-year-old second-year high school student attending Maijima Private High School. Standing 174 centimeters tall with a lean build of 54 kilograms, his appearance is characterized by brown hair and a pair of glasses, which has led to his classmates derisively calling him otamegane, a combination of the words otaku and glasses. He is almost always seen holding and playing on his handheld gaming device known as a PFP, which he treats as an essential piece of equipment.
Keima's most defining personality trait is his absolute and unwavering devotion to two-dimensional girls from dating simulation games, whom he considers vastly superior to what he dismissively calls three-dimensional real girls. He openly regards reality as a flawed and uninteresting game, and his obsession is so profound that he has earned the legendary online title of the God of Conquests or Otoshigami for his unmatched ability to successfully conquer any game heroine. Despite his poor reputation among his peers, Keima possesses a sharp intellect and consistently achieves top scores on his exams by applying the same analytical strategies used for conquering game characters to his studies, such as predicting test questions by analyzing his teacher's personality. His life revolves around gaming, and he has a catalog of thousands of conquered heroines, often setting personal deadlines to complete multiple games simultaneously.
His motivations are initially simple: to be left alone with his games. This changes when he accepts an email he believes to be a game challenge, which instead binds him to a contract with the demon Elsie from Hell. The contract physically manifests as a purple guillotine collar around his neck, invisible to ordinary people, which will behead both him and Elsie if he fails to cooperate. He is forced to use his conquest skills in the real world to help Elsie capture runaway spirits called Loose Souls, which hide within the hearts of girls, feeding on their negative emotions. The only way to expel these spirits is to fill the emotional void in the host's heart by making her fall in love with him, a process he calls conquest. Although he finds the idea of romancing real girls repugnant, his strong sense of self-preservation and, later, a growing sense of duty drive him to meticulously plan and execute these conquests with the same detached strategic brilliance he uses in games.
In the OVA Four Girls and an Idol, Keima continues his role as the reluctant partner to Elsie, applying his skills to new situations involving girls who are already part of his life. The story focuses on his interactions with several key characters. He works to understand and help the talented tennis player Mio Aoyama, who struggles under the pressure of her family's expectations. Concurrently, the idol Kanon Nakagawa, a previous conquest target, becomes more prominent, showing a clear interest in him, which causes jealousy among his other acquaintances, particularly Chihiro Kosaka. His relationships during this period are complex. His bond with Elsie evolves from seeing her as a useless annoyance to accepting her as a clumsy but permanent fixture in his household, even showing occasional concern for her well-being. With other girls like the athletic Ayumi Takahara and the shy librarian Shiori Shiomiya, he maintains a guarded but functional relationship, though he remains largely indifferent to any romantic hints they might give him. A significant relationship is with Chihiro Kosaka, a girl he considers a realistic, ordinary character without a clear conquest path, which ironically makes their interactions more unpredictable and challenging for him.
Throughout the broader narrative, Keima experiences subtle but meaningful development. While he publicly and privately maintains his devotion to two-dimensional girls, his forced interactions with real people begin to have an effect. He is not entirely cold-hearted, as he demonstrates by helping Chihiro start a light music club and tutoring its members to pass their exams, actions he performs without any contract obligation. His strategic mind is his greatest asset; he adapts galge tactics to real-world scenarios, meticulously planning his approach, adjusting his personality to match the girl's needs, and demonstrating incredible adaptability when his plans backfire. He has a famous catchphrase, I have seen the ending, which he declares when he has successfully charted a path to victory in a conquest. His physical abilities are average to below-average due to his sedentary lifestyle, though he has displayed surprising endurance in stressful situations. Academically gifted, he remains a top student despite his constant gaming in class. Keima Katsuragi stands as a character who uses the logic and rules of dating simulations as a lens to dissect and navigate the chaotic, illogical, and emotional world of real-life relationships, all while insisting he wants no part of it.
