Description
Elysia de Lute Ima, more commonly known as Elsie, is a demon from the New Hell who serves as an agent of the Runaway Spirit Squad, an organization dedicated to capturing evil spirits that have escaped into the human world. Despite being over three hundred years old, she appears as a teenage girl with long black hair tied into a ponytail, gray eyes, a height of 159 centimeters, and a weight of 44 kilograms. Before joining the Runaway Spirit Squad, she spent three centuries working as a cleaner in Hell, a job which left her with exceptional cleaning skills that she continues to use in her daily life.

When she first arrives in the human world, Elsie crashes into the life of protagonist Keima Katsuragi, seeking his help to capture a runaway spirit inhabiting a human girl. To facilitate her mission and remain close to Keima, she adopts the cover identity of his half-sister, telling his mother that she is the illegitimate child of Keima's father. She takes the name Katsuragi Eri and enrolls in the same class as Keima at Maijima Private High School, becoming his classmate and housemate.

Elsie possesses a cheerful, pure, and genuinely kind personality, though she is also famously clumsy and accident-prone. Her earnest dedication to her duties is frequently undercut by her comical misunderstandings of human society and her limited knowledge of modern history and technology, which often leads to humorous failures. Keima himself frequently refers to her as a bug demon or a no-good demon because of her consistent mistakes and lack of practical skills. She is also an enthusiastic fan of pop idol Kanon Nakagawa and has an intense, childlike love for fire trucks, a quirk that has become an endearing trait among fans of the series.

Her motivation for capturing runaway spirits is tied to her genuine sense of responsibility as a member of the Runaway Spirit Squad. She is deeply grateful to Keima for his help and becomes determined to prevent him from being beheaded as per the terms of their contract, which served as a major driving force for her throughout the narrative. She develops a deep affection for him, referring to him as her older brother and as God or God-like older brother, though she also seems to harbor romantic feelings for him that she does not fully understand or express directly. Over time, her chaotic and disruptive presence in Keima's carefully ordered life gradually softens into a genuine and warm camaraderie, and she earns his grudging familial affection.

In addition to her partnership with Keima, Elsie forms several key relationships with other characters. She works alongside fellow demon Haqua d'rot Herminium, who often finds herself exasperated by Elsie's incompetence but cares for her deeply nonetheless. She also befriends members of the 2B Pencils, the school band that includes Ayumi Takahara and Chihiro Kosaka, who recruit Elsie to play bass for their group. Keima's mother, Mari Katsuragi, readily accepts Elsie into the household and treats her like a real daughter, appreciating her help around the house and the positive influence she has on Keima.

Elsie's role in the story extends beyond simply assisting Keima in his conquests. She also serves as a crucial bridge between the human world and the supernatural elements of the series. Her innocence and unwavering loyalty often put her in a position to protect those she cares about, revealing moments of unexpected courage and competence, such as when she frees Haqua from possession or fights against the Vintage organization. During the arc where Kanon Nakagawa is injured and falls into a coma, Elsie even disguises herself as the pop idol to serve as her temporary replacement, preventing public panic and maintaining Kanon's career.

One of the most significant developments regarding Elsie comes late in the story, when her true nature is revealed. It is disclosed that she is actually a sealed cataclysmic entity, a powerful weapon created to sow destruction, and her real form is that of a final boss or ultimate weapon of Hell. She was originally meant to be used by dissidents within New Hell, but her supervisor, Dokurou Skull, thwarted these plans by sending her to Earth and allowing her to live as an ordinary demon. Despite this terrifying revelation, Elsie ultimately rejects her apocalyptic heritage and chooses to embrace her life as a human, renouncing the destructive power within her. In the final chapters of the story, she makes a wish to alter reality so that she truly becomes Keima's sister, taking the name Eri Katsuragi and becoming a permanent, legitimate member of the Katsuragi family, leaving her demon identity behind even though she still retains her memories.

Elsie possesses several notable abilities that aid her in her duties. She always carries a magical broom that she has owned for nearly three hundred years, which she uses for cleaning but which can also be used as a weapon when its settings are improperly adjusted, capable of causing massive destruction. The white skull-shaped hair accessory she wears on her head functions as a detector for runaway spirits, sensing the emotional turmoil in potential hosts. She also wears a floating, shape-shifting scarf known as her hagoromo, which has a variety of practical uses including granting invisibility, creating disguises, transforming the appearance of objects, and even designing clothing. Later in the manga, it is also revealed that she possesses the ability to stop time, a power befitting her true nature as a sealed weapon. Despite being a demon herself, Elsie ironically has a tremendous fear of ghosts and dark places, which adds another layer of contradiction to her already endearing and complex character.
