Description
Kanon Nakagawa is a sixteen-year-old student in class 2-B at Maijima Private High School, where she is also a classmate of Keima Katsuragi. Outside of school, she leads a dual life as a tremendously popular and award-winning solo idol, a career she began after being a member of the singing trio known as Citron. Her public image is that of a beautiful and charming star with a fantastic singing voice that appeals to a wide range of fans. Despite her fame and busy schedule, which often keeps her from attending classes, her appearance at school is a notable event for other students.
Beneath her cheerful and polite exterior, Kanon harbors profound insecurities and a fragile sense of self-worth. Her relentless drive to become an idol stems from painful childhood experiences of being socially invisible, where peers and teachers would overlook her or forget her presence entirely. This trauma instilled in her a desperate need for attention and acknowledgment, making her greatest fear not a loss of fame, but a return to being forgotten and unnoticed. Consequently, she becomes easily distressed by perceived slights and has a tendency to overthink and talk to herself when facing problems.
Her encounter with Keima Katsuragi becomes a central point of her story. When Keima fails to recognize her as an idol, her need for validation turns into an obsessive fixation. She attacks him with a pair of stun guns, an unusual tool she wields with surprising skill, and even commandeers stage equipment to hold private concerts for him on the school roof, all in an attempt to make him a fan. While she is well-liked by her staff for her polite demeanor, her interactions with Keima reveal a more obsessive-compulsive side; upon receiving his email address, she bombards him with a repetitive, ecstatic message and subsequently contacts him about every minor concern in her life.
Kanon’s character arc revolves around confronting her dependency on external validation. A runaway spirit exploits her emotional vulnerabilities, causing her to literally become transparent and fade from sight when her anxiety peaks. Through his calculated "capture," Keima ultimately refuses to be the sole source of her confidence, instead pushing her to recognize her own talent and ability to shine on her own merit. This revelation helps her overcome her fears and successfully perform a major concert.
Her development deepens significantly when it is revealed that the goddess Apollo resides within her. As a host for a goddess, Kanon is one of the few people who retains her full memories of her time with Keima after the spirit is expelled. This leads her to develop genuine romantic feelings for him, culminating in a public confession at school. However, this connection also places her in grave danger. She is attacked and left in a comatose state by a cursed blade from the organization Vintage, an event that sets in motion a major story arc to save her. Her plight ultimately requires the combined power of multiple goddesses to break the curse and restore her to life.
