Description
Genjou Kakouton is a character from the anime Ikki Tousen: Shūgaku Tōshi Keppu-roku and the broader Ikki Tousen franchise. He is the fictional counterpart of the historical Three Kingdoms general Xiahou Dun. Within the story, Kakouton is a student and a key fighter for Kyoushou Academy, also known as Xuchang Academy, which is the base of operations for the character Sousou Moutoku, the equivalent of Cao Cao. He is often portrayed as Sousou's most loyal and trusted subordinate, effectively acting as his right-hand man and the school's second-in-command.

In his second year of high school, Kakouton is an engineering student, a detail that informs one of his most distinctive personality traits. He is described as an honorable and competent fighter, but also deeply eccentric. His most notable quirk is a profound respect for the physical spaces where battles take place. He believes that streets and fighting grounds are sacred dojos that must be maintained. Consequently, after a fight, he will often spend a great deal of time repairing any damage he has caused to the pavement, walls, or surrounding environment, a habit that can be a source of comic relief and annoyance to other characters. This dedication to fundamentals has earned him the affectionate nickname Basics Ton-chan from some of his peers. His appearance is distinctive, featuring dark skin, a beanie, long messy hair tied back, and a notable eyepatch over his left eye. He is tall and physically fit, with a goatee.

Kakouton's primary motivation is his unwavering loyalty to Sousou Moutoku and his desire to protect Kyoushou Academy. He is deeply concerned with Sousou's well-being, particularly regarding the dangerous Devil King or dragon spirit that resides within his leader. This devotion drives many of his actions throughout the story, even putting him at odds with his own orders. While he is a serious and principled fighter, he also has a less publicized personal affection for Hakufu Sonsaku, the main protagonist from Nanyo Academy, although his interactions with her are often complicated by circumstances and rumors.

In the narrative, Kakouton serves a crucial role as a high-ranking fighter and the steadfast anchor for Kyoushou Academy, especially after the death of his close friend and fellow fighter, Kakuka. He commands significant respect even from rival fighters such as Kanu Unchou, who recognizes his honor and dedication. During the Great Toushi Tournament, he single-handedly defeats many opponents before being stopped in the semifinals by Ryoumou Shimei. One of the most pivotal events in his history occurs when he throws himself in front of Sousou to protect him from an assassin. The attack results in the loss of his left eye, forcing him to wear his signature eyepatch. This incident also triggers the awakening of Sousou's dragon spirit.

His key relationships are central to his character development. His bond with Sousou is the most significant, a friendship and loyalty that is tested severely. He also maintains a strong friendship with Kakuka, whose death deeply mourns and changes his position within the academy, elevating him to second-in-command. His interactions with Goei, Hakufu's mother, are notable for her persistent flirtation with him, which leads to rumors that he prefers mature women, a claim he vehemently denies. Goei also provides him with advice on how to defeat Hakufu in a tournament, which he does by specifically targeting her legs.

Across the anime series, including Shūgaku Tōshi Keppu-roku, Kakouton undergoes significant development. After losing his eye and later being severely injured and left for dead by Sousou's out-of-control dragon spirit, he suffers from amnesia. His journey involves a gradual recovery, spurred on by reminders of his past and his core identity, such as his engineering toolkit, which helps him regain his memories and his fighting spirit. He eventually recovers and continues to serve as a key leader for Kyoushou, facing formidable threats to defend his school and his leader.

As a fighter, Kakouton is officially ranked as a B-rank or C-rank toushi, yet his abilities consistently allow him to hold his own against much higher-ranked opponents, including A-rank fighters like Kakouen Myousai and Kanu Unchou. His fighting style is rooted in hand-to-hand combat and close-range melee techniques, with a heavy emphasis on what he calls the basics of fighting. Despite his official rank, his tenacity, skill, and strategic mind make him a far more formidable opponent than his label suggests, and he has earned the respect of many across the rival academies of the Kanto region.
