Description
In the 2012 CGI film 009 Re:Cyborg, Pyunma, designated Cyborg 008, is one of the nine protagonists. His background before being transformed by the Black Ghost organization is that of an African guerrilla fighter who was critically wounded and captured, later rebuilt as a cyborg engineered for aquatic warfare. For the specific events of the film, prior to the story, he had been studying in Tanzania. As the narrative begins years after the 00 Cyborg team disbanded, he is involved in research and investigation, having discovered a fossil resembling an angel's skeleton which becomes a crucial clue connected to the mysterious entity known as "His Voice" that is orchestrating global bombings.
Pyunma’s personality is defined by a calm, serious, and intellectual demeanor. He carries himself with the discipline of a battle-hardened soldier but is also studious and introspective, often seen analyzing information or reading on a tablet. He is described as quiet and possessing a strong-willed nature, valuing education and rejecting bigotry. Despite his serious exterior, he is a reliable team player who supports his fellow cyborgs, though he can show exasperation with their less disciplined behaviors. A deep-seated motivation for Pyunma, rooted in his history before the events of the film, is his fight against oppression and injustice, having originally joined a rebellion against a tyrannical regime in his homeland. This past drives him to protect others and combat those who would exploit the vulnerable.
In the story of 009 Re:Cyborg, Pyunma’s primary role is that of an investigator and tactical asset. His findings regarding the angel fossil in Tanzania are a major catalyst for the team’s reformation and their mission to counter the threat of His Voice. His specialized abilities, particularly for underwater operations, make him invaluable for reconnaissance and accessing dangerous, deep-sea locations to search for rare artifacts and information. He is seen piloting the team's submarine aircraft, the Dolphin, and applying his military experience to the group's strategic efforts. His key relationships are with his fellow 00 Cyborgs, with whom he shares a bond forged through shared trauma and countless battles against Black Ghost. He works closely with members like Jet Link and Albert Heinrich, and his loyalty to the team and Dr. Gilmore is absolute.
The character's development often stems from the conflict between his humanity and his cybernetic nature. In some storylines, after being heavily injured and receiving a new, streamlined body covered in fish-scale armor, he initially objects to the upgrade, feeling it makes him less human, but he ultimately accepts it to become a more effective fighter. This struggle reflects a central theme of the Cyborg 009 series, where characters must reconcile their mechanical enhancements with their human souls. His most notable ability is his aquatic adaptation, featuring a specialized set of mechanical lungs that allow him to breathe underwater and survive the crushing pressures at depths of up to ten kilometers or more. He also possesses foot-mounted propulsion systems for high-speed swimming. Furthermore, Pyunma is an expert marksman and a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, often utilizing a Super Gun, a multi-function weapon with settings ranging from a standard beam to a heat ray, stun, or knockout ray. His military training also grants him advanced knowledge of guerrilla tactics, which he frequently uses to the team's advantage.
