Description
Leo Aioria, also known as the Gold Saint of Leo, is a prominent supporting character in the 2014 CGI film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary. He is the younger brother of the Sagittarius Gold Saint Aiolos, who was posthumously branded a traitor after attempting to protect the infant Athena. This false accusation casts a long shadow over Aioria’s life, forcing him to endure years of suspicion and isolation from his fellow Saints. Despite the stigma, he remains fiercely dedicated to the Sanctuary and its Pope, seeking to prove his own worth and restore honor to his family name.
In terms of personality, Aioria is passionate, courageous, and driven by a strong sense of justice. He is described as a model Saint, embodying wisdom, benevolence, and courage. His loyalty to the Pope is absolute at the story’s start, though he harbors subtle doubts that he suppresses. He can appear confident and slightly arrogant, especially in battle, but beneath that exterior he is gentle and compassionate. This is shown when he tries to protect innocent children fleeing the Sanctuary and when he chooses to spare the Silver Saint Shaina rather than kill her. His core motivation is to clear his brother’s name and to serve Athena faithfully, though his initial blindness to the Pope’s corruption leads him into conflict.
In the film’s narrative, Aioria is one of the Gold Saints tasked with stopping the Bronze Saints—Seiya, Shiryu, Hyoga, Shun, and Ikki—and the young Saori Kido, who claims to be Athena reborn. He guards the fifth house of the Zodiac Temple, the House of Leo. During his confrontation with Seiya and the others, he fights fiercely under the influence of the Pope’s mind control. However, after Aiolos’s spirit intervenes and Aioria witnesses Saori’s divine power, he recognizes her as the true Athena and immediately renounces the false Pope. He then works to redeem himself, showing regret for his actions by attempting to save the wounded Cassios and apologizing for his earlier hostility.
Key relationships include his brother Aiolos, whose alleged betrayal defines Aioria’s internal conflict; the Pope (Arles, actually the Gemini Saint Saga in disguise), whom he initially trusts absolutely; and the Bronze Saints, especially Seiya, whom he fights before becoming an ally. He also shares a bond with fellow Gold Saints, though his social standing within the Sanctuary is strained due to his brother’s reputation.
Aioria undergoes significant development over the course of the story. He starts as a dutiful but conflicted enforcer of the Pope’s will, gradually moves toward doubt, and finally achieves clarity when he accepts the truth about his brother and Athena. This turning point transforms him from an antagonist into a loyal defender of the goddess.
As a Gold Saint, Aioria wields formidable cosmic energy. His signature techniques revolve around lightning and photon manipulation. His most famous attacks include Lightning Bolt, which concentrates hundreds of millions of light-speed punches into a single devastating strike, and Lightning Plasma, a wide-area attack that unleashes a barrage of energy punches. He also possesses the Lion’s Fang, a technique that uses high-density wind pressure to obliterate opponents at the atomic level. Beyond combat, Gold Saints like Aioria can move and react at light speed, fly through space, and use psychic abilities such as telekinesis and healing. In Legend of Sanctuary, his power is depicted as overwhelming, capable of challenging even the other Gold Saints and the Bronze Saints before he is turned.
