Description
Diana Cavendish is a central figure at Luna Nova Magical Academy, a student from a respected British magical family known as the Cavendishes, who are descendants of Beatrix, one of the Nine Olde Witches who founded the school. At sixteen years old, she has a tall and graceful appearance, with flowing blonde hair, often described as having a unique greenish-yellow hue, and clear blue eyes. Regarded by both peers and faculty as perhaps the most talented student in the academy's sixteen-hundred-year history, her abilities, work ethic, and demeanor set her apart as a near-perfect honor student.

Her personality is defined by a calm, rational, and intensely sincere approach to magic. As a member of a noble house, she almost always uses formal and polite language, which can come across as cold or haughty, especially to those like the protagonist Akko Kagari, who seem to lack discipline. This perceived arrogance is not born from simple prejudice or a desire to flaunt her lineage. She never boasts about her family name and even keeps her descent from the Nine Olde Witches a secret to avoid undue praise. Instead, her sharp words are typically rooted in frustration towards those who do not treat magic with the rigorous sincerity she believes it demands.

Underneath her reserved exterior lies a deeply warm-hearted and responsible individual. She has a strong sense of duty, admits her own mistakes without making excuses, and consistently acts to protect others from danger, regardless of the personal cost. This altruistic nature is a family trait, as the Cavendishes historically used their healing magic to save many lives, a legacy that ultimately led to her mother Bernadette overexerting herself and passing away. Diana’s primary motivation is to uphold this family legacy and fulfill her mother’s wish to create a new future for magic, helping those in need and restoring the glory of the magical world.

The most significant relationship in the story is her complex dynamic with Atsuko "Akko" Kagari. Initially, Diana serves as a rival, openly dismissing Akko’s clumsy magic and her unabashed admiration for the performer Shiny Chariot. However, it is gradually revealed that this criticism masks a secret: Diana herself was profoundly inspired by a Shiny Chariot show in her youth, an event arranged by her mother, and has treasured a rare Chariot card ever since. She was forced to hide this fandom due to the negative view of Chariot held by traditional magical families. While Diana represents magic as a disciplined craft built on study and tradition, she finds herself envious of the mysterious and charming power in Akko’s belief-driven magic, which can achieve feats that her own textbook perfection cannot.

As the story progresses, this rivalry transforms into a deep friendship and mutual respect. Diana conducts extensive research into the Grand Triskellion, the legendary magic Akko seeks, only to learn that while she is worthy of its power, only Akko, as the one chosen by the Shiny Rod, can actually wield it. Rather than becoming bitter, she chooses to support Akko. In a pivotal moment, Diana gives Akko her own precious premium Chariot card, on which is written the phrase "A believing heart is your magic," encouraging her to persevere even when her own powers fail. By the end of the series, they work together as true partners, combining their strengths in a final display of magic to save the world.

Other key relationships include her two constant companions, Hannah and Barbara, who look up to her as an idol, though Diana is more mature and often annoyed by their sycophantic and bullying tendencies. She also has a history with Andrew Hanbridge, a non-magical noble, with whom she would debate the value of magic in childhood; though they do not consider each other friends, he notably falls in love with her upon meeting her again.

Diana undergoes significant development from a seemingly unapproachable perfectionist to a humbler and more open individual. The arc climaxes when she returns home to save her family estate from ruin due to her aunt's mismanagement. With help from Akko, she proves her worth not by force, but by embodying the family's true spirit of kindness, ultimately choosing to save her aunt and cousin from a curse even after they betrayed her. This experience teaches her the value of relying on others, and she learns to laugh and open up, shedding the burden of having to appear perfect at all times.

Her magical abilities are extensive and nearly flawless. She demonstrates mastery over a wide array of advanced spells, including powerful defensive barriers, healing and regeneration magic, transformation spells, water creation, summoning, and attack techniques. She possesses skills in magical astronomy, history, white magic, and is even proficient in the ancient language of dragons, which she mastered at the age of twelve. Her talents range from high-level broomless flight to nullification magic, and she ultimately performs the legendary Final Shiny Arc alongside Akko. This combination of raw talent, rigorous academic knowledge, and a hidden, heartfelt passion for the wonder of magic makes her a complete and compelling witch.
