Movie
Description
Mr. Satomi is the widowed father of Naoko Satomi in the film The Wind Rises. He is a wealthy businessman who runs a mountain inn in Karuizawa where Jiro Horikoshi stays during a vacation. His background is that of a traditional, well-to-do family head, and he appears to have raised his daughter alone after the death of his wife. His personality is defined by a deep, protective love for Naoko, and he is shown to be caring and attentive to her well-being, especially regarding her health. When Naoko is diagnosed with tuberculosis, Mr. Satomi is deeply concerned and prioritizes her recovery, encouraging her to seek treatment. His central motivation is his daughter’s happiness and safety, which leads him to be initially cautious and surprised when Jiro asks for permission to marry Naoko, as he is aware of the severity of her illness. However, after seeing Jiro's sincerity and devotion, he ultimately gives his blessing, allowing the marriage to proceed under the care of Jiro’s supervisor Kurokawa and his wife. His role in the story is that of a supporting figure who facilitates the central romance by granting his approval and entrusting Naoko’s future to Jiro. His key relationships are with his daughter Naoko, whom he loves deeply and tries to protect, and with Jiro, whom he comes to respect as a worthy partner for Naoko. Mr. Satomi does not undergo significant personal development over the course of the film; he remains a steady, caring father who accepts the inevitable tragedy of his daughter’s condition with quiet dignity. He has no notable abilities beyond his role as a businessman and innkeeper, and his actions are largely defined by his parental concern and emotional support.
