TV-Series
Description
John Tanaka serves as the Director of the Galaxy Police and is the commanding officer of the Elite Mobile Task Force, which includes prominent pilots like Jody Summer and Dr. Stewart. Within the series, he is also known as the pilot of his own F-Zero machine, the Wonder Wasp.

On the surface, John Tanaka often presents himself as a gentle and thoughtful individual. However, this exterior masks a more timid and indecisive nature. He frequently finds himself caught between the formal orders from the Federation and the independent, often reckless actions of his subordinates, a situation that leaves him anxious and flustered. A recurring source of anxiety for him is the fear of being fired when missions do not go as planned, a stark contrast to the unwavering resolve shown by the task force members under his command. Despite his high rank, he is often portrayed as a figure of comic relief, with his leadership skills being a subject of debate among other characters.

His primary motivation and role in the story revolve around managing the operations of the Galaxy Police's task force in their battle against the villainous organization Dark Million. While he oversees missions and occasionally participates in F-Zero races himself, his personal desires can sometimes override his professional judgment. This is most evident in his immense infatuation with the singer Kate Alen. His obsession leads him to take significant risks, such as having himself shipped to Port Town to attend her concert, a decision that ultimately results in him being captured by an assassin.

Key relationships define much of his character. As the director, he is the superior of Jody Summer, though she and other members of the task force, like Dr. Stewart, often act autonomously, much to Tanaka's dismay. The dynamic is such that despite his apparent ineffectiveness, his team and even his own superiors do not treat him with contempt but rather accept his personality as a known quantity. His feelings for Kate Alen, however, are entirely unreciprocated; she does not make a lasting impression on him, once even failing to recognize who he was.

Throughout the series, there are rare moments where John Tanaka exhibits a sense of responsibility and confidence. One notable instance occurs during a race involving the character Octoman, where he abandons his usual anxious demeanor to demonstrate his authority and competitive spirit as a commander. He is also present for the final battle against Dark Million, fighting alongside the rest of the Mobile Task Force. In terms of notable abilities, beyond his skills as a racing pilot, he holds the considerable authority of being the Director of the Galaxy Police, a position that places him in charge of intergalactic law enforcement operations.
