Description
The character known as Cyborg 009, or Joe Shimamura, serves as the central protagonist in the 1967 anime film Cyborg 009 and the Monster Wars. This version of the character is a product of specific production decisions made to craft a hero suitable for a younger audience, resulting in notable differences from his original manga counterpart. In this film adaptation, Joe is presented as a young man in his late teens with a slender physique, dark eyes, and distinctively styled black hair that is swept back and spiked. He is visually set apart from his teammates by his attire, which consists of a white tunic and pants with blue buttons, complemented by a black belt, black boots, and his signature red, double-tailed scarf.

As the ninth and most advanced cyborg created by the evil Black Ghost organization, Joe was transformed against his will by the scientists working for the shadowy syndicate. However, he and his fellow cyborgs were helped to escape by Dr. Isaac Gilmore, the very scientist who oversaw their creation. Following their escape and the presumed defeat of Black Ghost, Joe attempts to resume a normal life, which in this film’s storyline involves a career as a race car driver. When monstrous creatures begin attacking global shipping and coastal cities, Joe is thrust back into action, taking on the responsibility of rallying his scattered teammates to confront this resurgent threat.

In terms of personality, this incarnation of Joe Shimamura is characterized by his immediate and decisive leadership. He does not hesitate to take charge, setting out alone to locate and convince his former comrades to rejoin the fight. While initially confused by the circumstances that made him a cyborg, he quickly settles into his role as a hero. He is driven by a deep-seated sense of duty, as demonstrated when he explains that he fights to protect the billions of people on Earth, risking his life without hesitation to stop Black Ghost. Despite his courageous and resolute exterior, the film shows him to be a compassionate figure, especially in his interactions with a mysterious girl named Helena. He treats her with patience and kindness, even as suspicions mount around her, and is visibly affected by the emotional turmoil of her eventual betrayal.

Joe's central role in the story revolves around being the catalyst for the team's reformation and the primary force driving their mission. He personally locates and recruits members like 004, 007, and 003, showing respect for 003’s initial reluctance to return to her life as a cyborg by being willing to let her go. His relationship with 003 is portrayed as close, and he is the one who manages to convince her to rejoin the team. His most significant and complicated relationship, however, is with Helena. After she stows away on their ship, Joe befriends her, ignorant of her true identity as the enemy spy Cyborg 0010. When her betrayal is revealed, Joe feels a potent mix of anger and disgust, yet he cannot bring himself to abandon her, saving her from a deadly chasm even after she attacks him. This act of mercy becomes a pivotal point, as Helena later defects from Black Ghost because of the kindness Joe showed her. She ultimately sacrifices her life to save him and the other cyborgs, leaving Joe to mourn her death, clutching the necklace she left behind and recognizing that she ultimately helped them achieve victory.

Throughout the narrative, Joe Shimamura displays notable character development, evolving from an initially reluctant hero to a decisive leader forced to confront the harsh realities of trust and loss. The film also presents a specific depiction of his abilities. As a cyborg, he possesses enhanced strength, durability, and reflexes that allow him to run faster and jump higher than any ordinary human. He is also shown to be armed with a super gun capable of blasting away threats. However, due to the production limitations and creative choices of the time, this version of 009 notably lacks his signature power from the original manga: the Accelerator, which would allow him to move at superhuman speeds. His combat prowess is instead demonstrated through his tactical thinking, such as when he devises the strategy to defeat the electrically charged 0011 brothers by tricking them into colliding with each other.
