Description
Captain Gundam is the central protagonist of the anime SD Gundam Force, serving as the primary defender of the futuristic city of Neotopia. He is the first unit produced by the Super Dimensional Guard's top-secret Gundam Force program, a combat mobile citizen built specifically to protect his homeland from the invading Dark Axis forces. His very existence is initially a secret kept from the public to maintain the peace of the city.

In terms of personality, Captain Gundam is defined by his heroic and brave nature but is portrayed as being fairly rigid and formal, especially in the beginning. His initial interactions with others are marked by a lack of understanding of human emotions, as he was designed purely for combat and defense. This stiffness stems from his mechanical origins, contrasting him with his later allies who were naturally born as mechanical life forms. He exhibits strong chronic hero syndrome, feeling a deep-seated compulsion to rescue others, even his worst enemies, often at great personal cost to his own body. This selfless drive is balanced by a naive and straight-laced demeanor, which makes him easy to fool at times but also serves as a grounding straight man to the more outlandish personalities of his teammates.

Captain Gundam's primary motivation is to fulfill his programming and duty to protect Neotopia from the Dark Axis. However, this mission evolves significantly after he meets a young boy named Shute. During an early battle, Shute's heartfelt encouragement activates Captain Gundam's core power source, the Soul Drive, allowing him to unleash his signature Captain Punch and defeat the enemy. The Soul Drive is a mysterious and vital component that responds to the emotions of others, particularly the bond of friendship. His motivation shifts from merely following orders to personally protecting his friends and understanding the emotions that give his Soul Drive power.

Captain Gundam's role in the story is as the field leader and heart of the multinational Gundam Force team. After the initial invasion, with permission from his commander, Chief Haro, he adopts a Mobile Citizen disguise to live among the people of Neotopia and remain close to Shute, whose presence is key to activating his full power. This disguise involves friendlier armor components, an inverted V-fin resembling eyebrows, and a mouthplate that opens to reveal a human-like mouth. He is later joined by two other heroes: Zero, a knight from the magical world of Lacroa, and Bakunetsumaru, a samurai from the feudal world of Ark. Together, they form a team that defends their respective worlds.

Key relationships define his character arc. His friendship with Shute is the most crucial, as it is the literal source of his strength and the catalyst for his emotional growth. Through Shute, and his comrades Zero and Bakunetsumaru, he learns to loosen up and becomes more human in his interactions. He also shares a significant antagonistic relationship with Commander Sazabi of the Dark Axis, culminating in a brutal one-on-one battle where both lose limbs and armor. During this fight, Captain destroys Sazabi's Dark Soul Drive, defeating him and saving Neotopia. Another notable relationship is with Professor Gerbera, a Dark Axis commander who is eventually revealed to be Madnug, a Gundam from Neotopia's future and a brother-like figure to Captain.

Captain Gundam undergoes significant development both emotionally and physically. He starts as a secretive, emotionless soldier but evolves into a compassionate hero who values friendship above all else. As a character built, he initially expresses envy that his naturally-born allies, Zero and Bakunetsumaru, possess emotions he lacks, but he eventually gains this understanding. Physically, he receives several notable upgrades throughout the series. After being severely damaged by the Big Zam, he utilizes the Heavy Weapon System, which adds missile pods and allows transformation into a tank-like GunVehicle mode. Later, after a devastating battle with Professor Gerbera, he receives a total body overhaul and becomes Hyper Captain Gundam, a more powerful form resembling the GP01-Fb Gundam Full Vernian. For the final battle against the Dark Axis headquarters, he equips the massive Option Z weapons pack, based on the GP03 Dendrobium Orchis, which grants him immense firepower. His signature ability remains the Captain Punch, a lethal fist attack powered by his Soul Drive.
