Description
Arashiyama is a character from the anime Papuwa, where he serves as a member of the Ganma Army, a powerful group of assassins. He initially appears as an antagonist, introducing himself as Gionkamen Arashiyama, a title reflecting his original role as the fourth assailant sent to confront a main protagonist, Shintaro. His physical appearance is notable, with chin-length blue hair and purple eyes, and his origins lie in Kyoto, Japan, which is reflected in his use of a Kyoto dialect reminiscent of a maiko, or apprentice geisha.

Despite his fearsome reputation as a self-proclaimed second only to Shintaro in terms of combat prowess, Arashiyama possesses a deeply introverted and shy personality that contrasts sharply with his formidable abilities. His greatest desire is simply to make friends, a goal he struggles to achieve due to a profound lack of self-confidence and poor social skills, which he partly attributes to the misguided wisdom imparted by his former teacher, Marker. This longing for companionship is so strong that he particularly wishes to befriend Shintaro, who was the first person to speak to him at the Ganma Academy and the first to offer friendship, even if that offer was initially born from desperation rather than genuine camaraderie. Arashiyama’s social awkwardness often leads him to take painful or over-the-top actions in his earnest attempts to connect with others, which are frequently met with rejection or indifference from his human peers, who tend to see him only as a colleague.

In his role within the story, Arashiyama is a highly proficient master of flame-based combat. His signature technique is the Dance of the Bird of Paradise of the Byodoin Temple Phoenix Hall, a powerful attack that engulfs his entire body in an aura of flames and can instantly evaporate a large swamp. Other known abilities include the Blazing Dragon Fist, Super Phoenix Fire, and the Final Flame Dance, a desperate, suicidal attack. When he is first introduced, he lives up to his reputation as a major threat, easily defeating Shintaro before being defeated himself by the latent power of another character, Papuwa. After his defeat, he remains on Papuwa Island, and although he engages in several rematches, he follows a common trope of becoming less formidable as a regular character. However, his combat intelligence remains sharp; for instance, he is able to feign defeat to discern the mechanics behind an opponent's trick.

Arashiyama’s key relationships are defined by his quest for friendship, which yields more success with the non-human creatures of Papuwa Island than with his fellow humans. He develops genuine bonds with some of the island's "namamono" (living beings), such as a bat named Tezuka, considering them his true friends and engaging in activities like playing cards with them. In contrast, his attempts to befriend humans are largely unsuccessful. He has a significant relationship with his former master, Marker, a fellow member of the Ganma special forces. Their master-student dynamic culminates in a decisive battle where Marker initially overwhelms Arashiyama, but the outcome is changed when Arashiyama chooses to use his suicidal Final Flame Dance to protect his companions, demonstrating his evolved priorities.

Over the course of the narrative, Arashiyama undergoes considerable development. Moving away from his initial role as a simple antagonist, he eventually dedicates himself fully to protecting Papuwa Island alongside his former rivals. In the final stages of the original story, he fights with everything he has against powerful enemies, including his own master. Through these trials, he finally achieves the true friendship he always longed for, forming a genuine bond with Shintaro and other characters like Tohoku Miyagi, Ninja Tottori, and Musha Koji. In the sequel series, Papuwa, Arashiyama is recruited along with these same companions to return to the island on a mission. His social awkwardness persists, and he is often treated as the first line of attack, but his distinctive personality is accepted by the others as a unique trait. Even so, he suffers the sad indignity of being completely forgotten by the namamono friends he made in the past, who thank him as a stranger after he protects them.
