Description
In the first theatrical film of the Saint Seiya franchise, Eiri Aizawa serves as the human host for the deity Eris, also known as the Evil Goddess of Discord. The Greek goddess Eris, whose soul was sealed within a golden apple, returns to the world of the living when the apple is brought to Earth by the Repulse comet.
The human component of this character is Eiri Aizawa, a young woman who works as a kind and gentle caretaker at an orphanage called the Star Children Academy. She is depicted as a caring individual, well-liked by the children under her care, and is a colleague of Miho, another orphanage worker. Eiri is initially presented as a shy and sweet-natured girl who develops a close connection with the Bronze Saint Cygnus Hyoga after he saves her life. While watching the stars together one night, Eiri is mesmerized by a shooting star, which is actually the golden apple containing Eris's spirit. Under the goddess's influence, she ventures alone into the woods, finds the apple, and becomes possessed.
Upon possessing Eiri, the goddess Eris takes full control, transforming the gentle young woman into a malevolent deity. Eris is characterized by an arrogant and sadistic personality, viewing humans and even her own subordinates as mere tools to be used and discarded. She harbors a deep-seated contempt for the human race and a specific enmity for Athena, whose protective and peaceful nature she finds contemptible. Her primary motivation is to sow chaos and discord across the world, believing that conflict is the natural order and that human strife is a beautiful spectacle. To this end, she does not seek to annihilate humanity but rather to instigate endless wars and turmoil, which serve as her source of power. She takes pleasure in the suffering of others, demonstrating this cruelty when she callously murders her own minion, the Ghost Saint Southern Cross Christ, merely for the chance to also wound Hyoga.
In the story, Eris's main objective is to achieve a complete and permanent resurrection in the modern era. To do this, she needs a powerful source of energy to regenerate her physical form. She kidnaps the goddess Athena, also known as Saori Kido, and uses the golden apple to trap her. The apple is placed against Athena's chest, where it begins to drain her life force and cosmos. As this process nears completion, Eris intends to abandon Eiri's body and be reborn in her own divine form, after which she plans to plunge the world into chaos. To protect herself from the Bronze Saints, she uses her power to resurrect five deceased warriors who once betrayed Athena, dubbing them the Ghost Saints or Ghost Five. These include Orion Jäger, Sagitta Maya, Southern Cross Christ, Scutum Jan, and Lyra Orpheus. They serve as her elite guard and primary enforcers.
Eris's key relationships are defined by manipulation and utility. Her bond with her host, Eiri Aizawa, is purely parasitic, as she forcibly occupies Eiri's body and silences her consciousness. She shows a particular, cruel interest in Hyoga, the Saint for whom Eiri had developed feelings, taunting him with the possessed girl's emotions before attempting to kill him. She is the central antagonist to Athena, viewing the goddess of wisdom and war as the primary obstacle to her chaotic designs, as Athena's very existence promotes peace and protects humanity. Her relationship with the Ghost Saints is transactional; she revives them from death in exchange for their loyalty, but she holds no genuine regard for them and does not hesitate to sacrifice them for her own benefit.
Eris does not undergo any significant character development, remaining a static and purely antagonistic force throughout the film. Her defeat comes when Pegasus Seiya, empowered by the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, uses its golden arrow to shatter the golden apple. This act destroys the source of her power and severs her connection to the mortal world, causing her to be cast back into the realm of the dead and freeing Eiri from her control.
Notable abilities of Eris include the power of possession, enabling her to take over a human body whose astrological fate aligns with her own. She can use the golden apple, a mystical artifact, to sap the life force and cosmos from a goddess like Athena, using that stolen energy to reconstruct her own divine body. She also possesses the power of necromancy, as she can resurrect deceased souls and grant them new, physical bodies to serve as her Ghost Saints. Her own divine cosmos is immense, powerful enough to cause earthquakes and tremors around the world as her resurrection nears completion. In her partially manifested state, she can fire powerful energy blasts from her trident and use telekinesis to manipulate objects from a distance. Once fully reborn, she wields a trident in combat and commands supernatural strength befitting an Olympian deity. Her presence in later works, such as the Saintia Sho manga and the film Legend of Crimson Youth, further establishes her recurring role as a symbol of strife who seeks to exploit moments of divine conflict to achieve her goals.
