Márcia Gomes
Description
Márcia Gomes was a highly respected Brazilian actress, dubladora (voice actress), and dubbing director with a career spanning over four decades. Born Marleide Gomes in São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo, in 1947, her entry into the performing arts was serendipitous. As a teenager, she enrolled in a radio theater course hoping to get into the same studios as her idol, singer Paul Anka. Although she could not finish the course, her talent was immediately recognized, leading to roles in radio novels and a new artistic name, Márcia Gomes, given to her by the renowned playwright Ivani Ribeiro.
When radio work declined, Gomes transitioned to dubbing in 1978 at the invitation of a colleague. Her first role in this new medium would become one of her most iconic: the voice of Felix the Cat. This marked the beginning of a prolific career where she became a familiar voice to generations of Brazilian viewers. In the realm of anime and Japanese productions, Gomes left a significant mark. Early on, she voiced the boy Zeca in the classic comedy O Gênio Maluco (Hakushon Daimaō) and Princess Flora in Honey Honey. She was also the voice of Glikko the squirrel in the film Enchanted Journey and the demoness Surpanakha in the Indo-Japanese co-production Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama.
Perhaps her most beloved roles came from the tokusatsu and magical girl genres. She achieved widespread fame as the heroic Mai Tsubasa, the Change Phoenix, in the hit series Esquadrão Relâmpago Changeman, a role that would connect her with fans for decades. She also voiced other characters in the genre, such as the villain Madogarbo in Jiban – O Policial de Aço and Dr. Potter in Sharivan – O Guardião do Espaço. In the world of anime, she was the goddess Eris in the first Os Cavaleiros do Zodíaco (Saint Seiya) film. Starting with the R season, she took over as the voice of the cat Luna in the iconic Sailor Moon franchise, a role she continued in subsequent series and reprised in the recent films Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos, which became her final works.
Beyond her on-screen roles, Márcia Gomes was a pioneering force behind the scenes. In 1990, she became a dubbing director, a position she held until the end of her life, working at prestigious studios like BKS, Master Sound, and Dubbing Mix. In this capacity, she directed projects such as Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin) and helped train new generations of voice actors. Her versatility extended to countless other characters, including Andy Panda in the Woody Woodpecker cartoons, Janine in the Ghostbusters films, and Penny in Inspector Gadget. Márcia Gomes passed away on December 12, 2024, at the age of 77, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in Brazilian dubbing.
