Description
Gorducho is a pivotal supporting character in the anime Speed Racer, known for being the youngest member of the Racer family. His full name is Kurio Mifune, and he is the seven-year-old brother of the protagonist, Speed. He is almost never seen without his inseparable companion, a pet chimpanzee named Chim Chim, who is known as Zequinha in the Brazilian Portuguese dub.
In terms of personality, Gorducho is characterized by an energetic, mischievous, and adventurous spirit. He is the quintessential pesky little brother, often causing trouble or inserting himself into situations where he is not supposed to be. Despite his young age, he is extremely loyal to his older brother and idolizes Speed's career as a race car driver. His primary motivation is to be part of the action and to help his brother, even if his methods are unconventional and usually against the direct orders of his parents to stay home.
Gorducho's role in the story is twofold: he serves as the primary source of comic relief in the series, and he frequently acts as an unexpected asset to Speed. His most defining characteristic and recurring action is hiding in the trunk of the Mach 5, Speed's famous race car, before a major race or adventure. While Speed and their father, Pops Racer, intend for him to remain safely at home, Gorducho and Chim Chim consistently stow away. Once discovered, they often find themselves in dangerous situations, forcing Speed to adapt his plans. However, this intrusion is not always a hindrance; on numerous occasions, Gorducho and his monkey become the secret weapon that helps Speed escape from traps set by villains or overcome obstacles that cannot be solved by driving alone.
Regarding key relationships, Gorducho's most notable bond is with his pet monkey, Chim Chim. Together, they function almost as a single comedic unit, communicating wordlessly and getting into synchronized mischief. He looks up to his brother Speed with great admiration, though Speed is often exasperated by his sudden appearances. Within the family dynamics, he is the child to Pops Racer and Mom Racer. In the narrative, he also shares a camaraderie with the mysterious Racer X, an ally who has a secret connection to the family.
In terms of character development, Gorducho remains a static character throughout the original 1960s series. He does not undergo significant emotional growth or aging; his primary function is to maintain the status quo of the child sidekick who provides humor and occasional assistance. His traits are established in his first appearance and remain consistent.
Gorducho does not possess driving or fighting skills like his brother. His notable abilities are instead tied to his size and resourcefulness. Because he is small, he is able to hide in the confined space of the Mach 5’s trunk without detection. He is also adept at using the car’s special gadgets when Speed cannot reach them, such as the homing robot, and he often physically manipulates switches or releases mechanisms that allow Speed to focus on driving. His courage, or perhaps his lack of awareness of danger, allows him to perform tasks that an adult character might hesitate to attempt, effectively making him a valuable, if unofficial, member of the racing team.
