Description
In the 1986 film Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies, which reimagines the earliest adventures of the series, Son Goku is introduced as a young, monkey-tailed boy living in solitude within a wilderness area. Having no memory of his life before being found by his adoptive grandfather, Gohan, Goku has spent his entire existence in the deep forests and mountains since his grandparent's death. This has left him innocent, unsocialized, and possessing a simple, pure-hearted view of the world. He is distinguished by his wild, spiky black hair, his brown monkey's tail, and a boundless reserve of energy and curiosity.

His personality is defined by an unwavering optimism, a cheerful disposition, and an insatiable appetite. Despite his small stature, Goku is immensely strong and almost completely fearless. He displays a level of physical power far beyond that of a normal human, capable of hunting enormous fish with his bare hands, destroying a large tree with a single punch, and running at superhuman speeds while carrying massive loads. His naivete is a central character trait; he has never seen a girl before meeting Bulma and often reacts to modern technology and social customs with wide-eyed confusion. His moral compass is straightforward and unshakeable, primarily guided by a sense of loyalty to his friends and the simple desire to protect those who are kind to him.

In the story, Goku's primary motivation is tied to a keepsake from his late grandfather: the Four-Star Dragon Ball. He fiercely protects this orange crystal ball, believing it to be the embodiment of his grandfather's spirit. His initial role in the plot begins when he meets the teenage genius Bulma, who is searching for the seven magical Dragon Balls to wish for a perfect boyfriend. After a brief, comedic confrontation, Goku reluctantly agrees to accompany her on her journey, primarily to retrieve his own Four-Star ball after it is stolen by the minions of the tyrannical King Gurumes.

His role quickly evolves from a reluctant guide into the primary muscle and hero of the group. He single-handedly confronts bandits, animals, and the king's elite soldiers. Goku serves as the group's unbreakable shield and sword, using his brute strength and the extendable Power Pole, a weapon left to him by his grandfather, to battle enemies like the hulking warrior Vongo, which he defeats by knocking him through a castle wall. Unlike his companions, who are often motivated by greed or fear, Goku fights purely for the challenge and to protect his new friends.

His key relationships are established through this quest. His partnership with Bulma is the catalyst for the entire adventure; they share a sibling-like dynamic where her intelligence and technology complement his physical power, though he frequently frustrates her with his uncivilized behavior. He develops a respectful rivalry with the desert bandit Yamcha, recognizing him as a worthy martial artist. He also briefly encounters the perverted martial arts master, Master Roshi, from whom he learns the existence of the Kamehameha wave, a powerful energy technique. When Goku tries to replicate the move, he manages to destroy a rock, demonstrating his incredible, if still untrained, talent for ki manipulation. He also befriends a young girl named Penny, whose village is being destroyed by King Gurumes' mining operations, which gives him a concrete goal to fight for beyond his own trinket.

In terms of development, the film presents Goku at the very start of his legendary journey. He begins as a feral child living only for his next meal and his grandfather's memento. By the end of the film, his experiences have expanded his world dramatically; he learns to channel his energy (the Kamehameha), makes his first human friends, and takes his first step toward becoming a warrior who defends the innocent. His character arc is subtle but distinct, moving from isolated survival to being an active, engaged participant in a large-scale conflict against the monstrous King Gurumes.

His notable abilities in this film, while immature compared to his later depictions, are extraordinary for a child. He possesses superhuman strength sufficient to lift and carry giant fish and smash through stone walls, incredible speed that allows him to run across treetops, and extreme durability, surviving point-blank gunfire to the face and falls from great heights without injury. He uses his tail with prehensile skill for balance and grabbing. His primary weapon is the Nyoibo, or Power Pole, which he wields with great proficiency. His combat style is purely instinctual, relying on brute force and relentless aggression rather than technique. However, his encounter with Master Roshi plants the seed for his future growth, as his failed attempt at the Kamehameha wave is his first conscious effort to weaponize his inner life force.
