Description
Death Mask di Cancer appears in the anime film Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth as one of the resurrected Gold Saints. In the story, he is revived alongside others who had perished in the Sanctuary battle, including Saga of Gemini, Shura of Capricorn, Camus of Aquarius, and Aphrodite of Pisces. These fallen Gold Saints are brought back to serve Phoebus Abel, the God of the Corona, becoming his warriors against Athena and the Bronze Saints.
Before his death in the Sanctuary arc, Deathmask was known as the most vicious and cruel of the Gold Saints. He served the false Pope, knowing full well of the deception, because he adhered to a philosophy that justice is determined by the victors and that power alone defines what is right. His temple was decorated with the faces of those he had killed, including innocent civilians, which he considered trophies of his strength. He took pleasure in combat and killing, showing no remorse for his actions and even attempting to murder an innocent girl simply to disrupt his opponent's concentration. Despite his bloodthirsty nature, he was paradoxically terrified of his own death.
In Legend of Crimson Youth, Deathmask's role is to confront the Bronze Saints who have infiltrated the Sanctuary to rescue Athena. He specifically faces Shiryu of Dragon once again, a rematch of their previous battle. During this encounter, Deathmask initially appears to have the upper hand against his old rival. However, the fight takes a different turn than before. Shiryu deliberately feigns weakness, allowing Deathmask to believe he is winning in order to trick the Gold Saint into revealing the location where Athena is being held captive. Once Shiryu confirms that there is still hope to save the goddess, he stops toying with his opponent. With his objective complete, Shiryu turns the tables and defeats Deathmask with a single, decisive blow.
This version of Deathmask retains the key traits from his original appearance. He is arrogant and confident in his power as a Gold Saint, believing himself superior to the Bronze Saints. His motivation in the film is simply to serve Abel, the current power in control of the Sanctuary, which aligns with his established belief that following the strong is the only path to justice. His relationship with Shiryu is one of bitter rivalry, built upon their previous lethal encounter.
As a Gold Saint, Deathmask possesses the ability to move and punch at the speed of light by awakening the Seventh Sense. He is also a powerful psychic, capable of telekinesis and levitation, and can teleport himself to the border between the living and the dead. His signature technique is the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, also known as the Praesepe Underworld Waves. By concentrating his cosmos on his index finger, he releases a spiritual wave that forcibly separates the soul of his opponent from their physical body and banishes it to Yomotsu Hirasaka, the entrance to the underworld. Once a soul is sent there, it is nearly impossible to return without divine intervention. Deathmask himself can freely travel to this dimension and back, using it as a strategic advantage in battle.
