Description
Cid Highwind is a former mechanical engineer and pilot whose lifelong dream of space exploration was shattered before the events of Final Fantasy VII. He was the head of the Shinra Electric Power Company's space program, but aborted the launch of the Shinra No. 26 rocket to save the life of his assistant, Shera, who was performing an unauthorized final check. Following this incident, Shinra deemed space travel financially unviable and permanently cancelled the project, leaving Cid bitter and resentful. He blamed Shera for the loss of his dream, and for years treated her poorly, though she remained devoted to him, feeling responsible for his fate.
In terms of personality, Cid is famously rough around the edges. He is known for his short temper, frequent swearing, and a habit of chain-smoking cigarettes. Despite his crude and often gruff exterior, he possesses a fundamentally good heart and a strong sense of integrity. His sacrifice of the rocket launch, despite his immense personal disappointment, is a testament to his unwillingness to let someone die for his ambition. By the time of Advent Children, Cid has mellowed somewhat. This is largely because he finally achieved his goal of traveling to space during the events of the original game, which allowed him to let go of much of his pent-up anger and reconcile with Shera.
In Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Cid plays a supporting but crucial role. He arrives at a critical moment to assist his former comrades in their battle against the remnants of Sephiroth. Piloting his newest and most advanced airship, which he has named the Shera in her honor, he provides essential firepower and transportation. He first appears to rescue Tifa Lockhart and a child named Denzel from a group of Shadow Creepers, and then joins the larger battle against the summoned creature Bahamut SIN, using his airship to help bring the monster down. After the final confrontations, he is present with the rest of the group in the church as they celebrate their victory and the beginning of the planet's recovery.
Cid maintains close relationships with the other members of the former AVALANCHE group, including Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace, and Yuffie Kisaragi. He is regarded as the best pilot in the world, and his mechanical expertise and leadership skills are deeply respected by his peers. During the original game, he was even chosen to lead the party during a period when Cloud was incapacitated. His most significant relationship is with Shera, who is implied to still be a part of his life; by the time of the sequel game Dirge of Cerberus, which takes place a year after Advent Children, the two are confirmed to be married.
A skilled combatant, Cid fights with a spear, fitting the classic dragoon archetype. His fighting style incorporates powerful jumping attacks, and he is capable of using materia to cast magic spells. However, his most notable abilities are his unparalleled skills as an aviator and aerospace engineer. The airship Shera, which he designed and built himself, is a testament to his genius and a direct successor to his earlier legendary airship, the Highwind.
