Description
Naoto Hachiouji, universally known as "Senpai," navigates high school burdened by crippling introversion and social anxiety, seeking refuge in solitude. His sanctuary is the art club room, where he dedicates himself to drawing manga. Tall and lanky, with pale, sun-sensitive skin and curly brown hair frequently likened to sheep's fleece, he habitually adjusts his horn-rimmed glasses when flustered. He later adopts contact lenses yet continues the familiar gesture. His attire is consistently practical: a neatly buttoned school uniform—white shirt with black trousers—and functional clothing elsewhere.

A history of prolonged bullying shaped Senpai's defenses around indifference and avoidance, blurring the faces of past tormentors in his memory as he clings to emotional detachment for safety. This shield shatters when first-year Hayase Nagatoro discovers his manga and subjects him to relentless teasing, provoking his first tears from bullying. Initially perceiving her actions as cruel, he tries to evade her, but Nagatoro's persistence gradually pulls him from his shell.

Artistically gifted, Senpai crafts a fantasy manga series starring Siegfried, a self-insert protagonist, and a knight modeled after art club president Sana Sunomiya. Early nervousness hampers his ability to draw female figures, though persistent practice overcomes this hurdle, allowing him to eventually include characters inspired by Nagatoro and her friends. Despite this skill, his self-esteem remains low; he repeatedly claims drawing is his sole talent and initially deflects any praise.

Sustained interactions with Nagatoro and her friends—Gamo, Yoshi, and Sakura—fuel his development. Though initially intimidated, he slowly bonds with the group, earning their respect through gentlemanly conduct and a lack of ulterior motives. Nagatoro's teasing evolves from harsh provocation to playful encouragement, nudging him towards assertiveness. Key moments include:
* Defending Nagatoro from ogling classmates.
* Initiating protective physical contact in crowds or danger.
* Occasionally teasing her in return.
* Engaging in academic rivalry with cram school challenger Machida, leading to a bet involving nude drawing.

His connection with Nagatoro deepens into mutual romantic interest. He promises her a kiss if she defeats rival Orihara in a judo tournament; concurrently, he vows to confess should he rank first in a mock entrance exam. Though he fails academically, he confesses regardless, and they become a couple. Their relationship strains when Nagatoro discovers his drawing of Machida posing nude, causing her to avoid him temporarily. Senpai reconciles by apologizing and pledging future honesty.

Academically focused on entering Tokyo University of the Arts, Senpai moves to Tokyo after high school graduation. He later invites Nagatoro to live with him upon her graduation, an offer she accepts. His social growth extends beyond Nagatoro's circle, forming new friendships and participating in previously avoided activities like sports, acknowledging they can be enjoyable occasionally.
