Description
Haruka Tenoh is the civilian identity of Sailor Uranus, a character who formally appears in the third story arc of the metaseries, though she is first hinted at in silhouette earlier in the narrative. As a student barely sixteen years old, she attends the elite Mugen Academy, a school for geniuses, where she notably wears the male uniform and is often mistaken for a boy. Her birthday is January 27th. Haruka is a prodigious and accomplished race car driver, a skill listed as her greatest talent and her lifelong dream, and she also enjoys motorcycle racing. She demonstrates other refined skills, including playing the piano. Despite being a teenager, Haruka lives independently with her partner, Michiru Kaioh, and the two appear to be quite wealthy, supported by unspecified means or patrons, even owning and piloting their own helicopter.
In terms of personality, Haruka is known for being strong-willed, confident, and fiercely protective of her mission and loved ones. She presents a masculine demeanor in both her clothing and speech, using the masculine pronoun "boku," which often leads to others initially perceiving her as a handsome young man. She has a charming and flirtatious nature, frequently teasing pretty girls, and shares a playful dynamic with Usagi Tsukino that includes light flirting. While capable of being doting and affectionate in private, she is often seen as standoffish and cold, particularly in the anime adaptation where she maintains a distant and practical front. She is a private person who hates feeling restricted and becomes flustered when teased herself, having a noted difficulty with romantic confessions. Haruka's determination to fulfill her duty is absolute; she is willing to make morally difficult choices and believes that sacrifices may be necessary to protect the world, which sometimes puts her at odds with the more idealistic Inner Sailor Guardians.
Her primary motivation is the completion of her sacred duty as an Outer Sailor Guardian, which is to protect the solar system from external invaders. This mission is her highest priority, and she shares this burden with Michiru and the other Outer Guardians. Unlike the Inner Guardians who were awakened by moon cats, Haruka awakened to her powers with the help of Sailor Neptune. Her goal in the Sailor Moon S arc is specifically to find the three Talismans to summon the Holy Grail, a task she pursues with ruthless dedication.
Haruka's most significant relationship is with Michiru Kaioh, Sailor Neptune. They are constant companions and romantic partners, a fact that is portrayed as a stable and mature relationship. Their personalities are complementary, with Haruka being the bold and active partner to Michiru's elegant and calm demeanor. Together with Setsuna Meiou, Sailor Pluto, they form the core of the Outer Guardians and work closely as a team. Following the rebirth of Hotaru Tomoe, Sailor Saturn, as an infant, the trio vows to become her family and raise her. In the manga and later anime seasons, the four are shown living together as a close, adopted family. Haruka's relationship with the Inner Guardians, particularly Sailor Moon, is initially tense due to the Outers' colder, more pragmatic methods, but she ultimately comes to respect and fight alongside them.
Throughout the series, Haruka undergoes development primarily in her role and power level. She begins as a mysterious and antagonistic figure to the Inner Guardians, but eventually becomes a trusted ally. In the anime, she achieves an upgraded form, Super Sailor Uranus, which comes with a costume change that includes a heart-shaped front bow, a star on her choker, and translucent shoulder pads. In the manga, she obtains her Sailor Crystal, the Uranus Crystal, allowing her to transform into even more powerful states, including an Eternal form analogous to Eternal Sailor Moon. Her past life as Princess Uranus of her home planet, dwelling in Miranda Castle, is also explored in the source material.
As a Sailor Guardian, Haruka possesses formidable abilities tied to her title as the Soldier of the Sky or Flight, controlling forces of wind, light, and air. Her primary attack is World Shaking, where she gathers energy from the sky and hurls a powerful sphere that can devastate the ground and disintegrate enemies. She is the wielder of the Space Sword, one of the three powerful Talismans, which she uses for her second attack, Space Sword Blaster, firing multiple wind blades or engaging in direct physical strikes. In the manga, she learns a more advanced attack called Space Turbulence. She is also noted for her exceptional physical strength and combat skills, often engaging in hand-to-hand fighting more aggressively than other Sailor Guardians.
