Description
Battia, whose full name is Battia Bureitin Rou, is a supporting character from the 1986 anime Outlanders. She is a member of the Santovasku Galactic Empire, a civilization known for its organic spacecraft and horned, warrior-like citizens. She is a catgirl, a type of character with feline features that is common in the science fiction and fantasy genres.
Battia holds the position of a royal guard, indicating her high level of combat skill and her trusted status within the empire's hierarchy. She is characterized as a proud and formidable warrior, arguably even more skilled in battle than her best friend, First Princess Kahm. Battia's personality is brash, direct, and confident. She is not afraid to speak her mind, often teasing or openly criticizing her friends, particularly regarding their romantic choices. She has a great deal of "experience" with men, which contrasts sharply with the more naive princess. This experience is reflected in her relationship with the beast-man Geobaldi, whom she refers to as her boyfriend.
Her primary role in the story is that of a loyal friend and ally to Princess Kahm. Despite their frequent bickering, which they resolve through friendly but genuine sword battles, Battia is deeply devoted to Kahm. When the princess chooses an Earth photographer, Tetsuya Wakatsuki, as her fiancé, Battia is skeptical and mocks the choice, but ultimately supports her friend's decisions. Her loyalty is further demonstrated when she rescues Tetsuya from being executed by being thrown into a pit of giant worms, as she understands his importance to Kahm.
Key relationships define her actions throughout the narrative. Her friendship with Princess Kahm is the most central, a bond that is both affectionate and competitive. Her romantic relationship with Geobaldi is presented as more casual and based on mutual strength and a shared, rough-and-tumble history. In one exchange, she asks if he remembers their first time together, to which he replies that they were probably drunk. Despite this seemingly blasé attitude, they fight alongside one another, and Geobaldi comes to her aid in battle.
Battia does not undergo a dramatic character arc, but her role is consistent as the pragmatic and battle-ready counterpoint to the princess's romantic impulsiveness. She is a catalyst for action, often stepping in to resolve situations through force or direct intervention when diplomacy or emotion proves ineffective. Her notable abilities are almost entirely combat-oriented. She is an expert swordswoman, and her physical prowess is such that she can challenge Kahm, a princess renowned for her own battlefield skills, as a near-equal. As a member of the imperial forces, she is also presumably skilled in operating the empire's organic technology, though her primary contribution is always on the front lines of a fight.
