Description
Professor Shikishima is a scientist whose life is bound up with the Tetsujin Project, the secret wartime program to build giant robot weapons for the Imperial Japanese Army. During the war he worked as an assistant to Dr. Kaneda, the engineer who designed the Tetsujin machines, and he survived the project's collapse after Japan's defeat. When Dr. Kaneda died before Tetsujin 28 could be completed and put to proper use, Shikishima took charge of the unfinished robot, finished its development, and stored it away. He also took responsibility for Kaneda's young son, Shotaro, becoming the boy's guardian and mentor. It is Shikishima who eventually hands the robot's remote control to Shotaro, telling him that he must carry on his father's wishes.
In the years after the war, Shikishima builds Shikishima Industries into a powerful technology company, and the firm's resources and facilities become an important support base for the battles that follow. His outward manner is serious and deadpan; he rarely shows strong expression and approaches most situations with the calm of a veteran engineer. Beneath this reserved surface, however, he is deeply emotional and cares intensely about the people around him, especially Shotaro and his own family. In some versions of the story he is shown to have a wife and a daughter, Makiko, and his protective feelings extend naturally to the boy he has raised.
