Kotaro is a young orphan boy living in the Sengoku period of Japan. He is the central figure of the narrative, a prophesied child whose blood is believed to be the essential ingredient for an elixir of immortality sought by Ming dynasty warriors from China. This makes him the target of a relentless hunt by the Ming commander Bai-Luan and his band of skilled warriors, as well as opportunistic local Japanese warlords like Lord Akaike who see him as a valuable asset.

Kotaro’s personality is initially defined by deep distrust and a guarded, self-reliant nature. Having spent his childhood fleeing from pursuers, he has learned to rely almost exclusively on himself and his loyal dog, Tobimaru, who is his sole source of unwavering companionship and protection. He is naturally silent and observant, assessing threats with a maturity far beyond his years. His primary motivation is simple survival, coupled with a deep desire to find a person and a place he can truly trust.

His hiring of the wandering ronin Nanashi as a bodyguard in exchange for a precious gem sets the central dynamic of the story into motion. This relationship evolves from a strict business transaction into a profound paternal bond. Kotaro acts as the catalyst for Nanashi’s redemption, forcing the troubled swordsman to confront his traumatic past and break his vow of pacifism in order to protect the boy. In turn, Nanashi becomes the first adult Kotaro trusts completely, teaching him the value of genuine human connection. Outside of this central bond, Kotaro’s relationship with Tobimaru remains his emotional anchor.

Kotaro’s role in the story is that of an innocent at the heart of a violent conflict, representing the future and a chance for the adult characters to find meaning beyond their bloody pasts.
