Description
Joy, who is known as Azusa Yamato in the original Japanese version, is one of the main protagonists of the anime Superbook and the best friend and next-door neighbor of the character Chris Peeper. She is a student who becomes a traveler through biblical history alongside Chris and his toy robot, Gizmo.

In terms of appearance, Joy has a small frame, light skin, and brown eyes. Her hair is blonde, though its specific shade can sometimes vary between orange, yellow, or green depending on the episode, and she sports wavy bangs. Her typical outfit consists of a pink and white dress with a red belt, paired with red shoes. As the series progresses into its second season, which takes place two years later, Joy is depicted as having grown taller.

Joy is portrayed as a conscientious and hard-working individual, often contrasting with Chris who can be more lazy or selfish. She has a quick temper and is easily angered, particularly when Chris teases her. One notable example of this dynamic is when Chris jokingly implies she is too fat for a new dress, leading Joy to chase him around the house until he apologizes. Despite this, she is also kind-hearted and forgiving, as she ultimately accepts an apology from Chris after he damages her property. Her personality includes a strong-willed and sometimes jealous streak, as she has a clear fondness for Chris and becomes upset when he shows interest in other girls, even going so far as to state her expectation that they will marry when they grow up.

The primary motivation for Joy, alongside Chris, is to learn from the moral and spiritual lessons presented in the biblical stories they enter through the Superbook. They are typically faced with a real-world problem at the start of an episode, and their journey into the past helps them find a solution or gain a new perspective. For instance, after witnessing a school bully receive mercy instead of punishment for theft, Joy travels to the story of Jonah, where she relates to his frustrations before being moved to live out the concept of forgiveness. In another instance, Joy struggles to defend a new girl at school against a classmate, a dilemma that leads her to meet Queen Esther and learn about courage and standing up for what is right, even at great personal cost. When she finds herself exhausted while helping with a disaster relief effort, her journey with the Apostle Paul teaches her to find strength to persevere in difficult circumstances.

As the co-protagonist, Joy holds a central role in the story's structure. She is one of the primary observers who, along with Chris, experiences biblical events firsthand, interacting with key figures and learning lessons that are directly applicable to her life in the present day. Her key relationships are the foundation of the series. Her closest relationship is with Chris Peeper, a next-door neighbor and her best friend, and their dynamic is central to the narrative. She also shares a strong bond with Gizmo, Chris's toy robot who becomes a fully functional and speaking companion during their adventures. The story also often involves Chris's mother, Phoebe, in their home life.

Throughout the series, Joy demonstrates significant character development as she applies the lessons from her biblical adventures to her own behavior. She learns to overcome her frustrations to practice genuine forgiveness, develops the fortitude to stand up against peer pressure and do what is right, finds resilience and strength to continue when her own energy fails, and navigates conflicts with Chris, ultimately choosing reconciliation over holding a grudge, such as when she accidentally damages Gizmo and must seek Chris's forgiveness.

Joy does not possess supernatural abilities herself. Her notable ability is her willingness to learn from the stories she experiences and apply those moral and spiritual insights to solve problems and grow as a person upon returning to her own time. Her value as a character comes from her relatable struggles with common childhood issues like fairness, peer pressure, and friendship, making the historical lessons accessible and relevant.
