Description
Gawl is the central figure of his narrative, a young man who travels from a future timeline to the past alongside his companions Koji and Ryo. Their mission is to prevent the discovery of a gene that, in their original timeline, led to widespread calamity and the creation of powerful beings known as Generators. Though their plan was to arrive with a year to spare, the group finds themselves transported to only three months before the key event, forcing them into a race against time.

In his everyday appearance, Gawl presents a stark contrast to his formidable capabilities. He often seems dim-witted and displays a notably lax and lazy demeanor, frequently found sleeping during classes or when riding in cars. This relaxed and sometimes impulsive facade can make him appear foolish, but it is understood that his frequent need for rest is a direct consequence of the immense physical toll his transformations and battles take on his body. Beneath this unconcerned surface lies a deep well of loyalty and protectiveness for his friends, a commitment he upholds even when it means risking his own life. This foolhardy and carefree attitude is also suggested to be a mask, partially concealing his personal despair over his own humanity.

Gawl's primary motivation is the success of his group's mission to alter the past and save the future from the tyranny of Generators. He is driven by a powerful sense of duty to protect Koji and Ryo, for whom he repeatedly puts himself in harm's way. As the main combatant of the trio, his role is to act as their shield and sword, generating into a powerful form to face the enemy Generators sent to stop them, allowing his more intellectually-focused friends to pursue the scientific aspects of their mission. Despite carrying the burden of being the most powerful weapon on their side, he shows no resentment, embracing his function with a sense of grim necessity.

His key relationships are central to the story. He is part of a tight-knit trio with Koji and Ryo, who are both his fellow time-travelers and fellow Generators, though they are far less powerful than he is. There is a strong undercurrent of guilt from Ryo, who was responsible for the experiments that turned Gawl into a Generator before he was even born. A significant relationship develops with a girl named Masami, who initially mistakes Gawl for a pervert, leading to constant comedic conflict. Despite this poor first impression, a clear romantic interest and affection grow between them over the course of the series. He also shares a profound, tragic connection to a character named Natsume, who is eventually revealed to be the genetic mother from whom Gawl and his friends were cloned or grown in the future.

Gawl undergoes significant development, much of it tied to tragedy and sacrifice. His emotional breaking point is reached upon the death of Natsume, which sends him into a blind rage and triggers a massive, feral Rage Form, far larger and more powerful than his standard state, standing several meters tall. In the final confrontation with the primary antagonist, Ryuko Saito, she rips out his Generator core, which acts as his heart, leading to a critical moment where he appears to die. However, his will endures, and through a powerful mental image of Natsume, he uses his desire to protect the world to control temporal energies and recreate reality itself, finally stopping the future catastrophe even though he cannot undo her death.

Gawl's notable abilities are rooted in his nature as a Generator. Even in his human form, he displays superhuman levels of athleticism, strength, and endurance, capable of feats like jumping several meters into the air and surviving impacts from falling construction equipment. His true power is unleashed when he performs an Exogenerate, transforming into a metalloid, organic-metal warrior. In this state, his power is immense, designed for combat. He is classified as a Phase 4 Generator, meaning he is self-aware and in full physical control of his form, but he lacks the ability for vocal communication and can only express himself through grunts or roars. The source of his life and power is the crystalline Core on his chest, which is virtually indestructible except by another Generator. Shattering this core is the only way to kill him. In his most desperate moment of grief and rage, he can access an advanced state, the Rage Form, which sacrifices control and reason for overwhelming, destructive power.
