Description
Jun, also known as Jun the Swan, is a central character in the anime Gatchaman, designated as team member G-3. Her civilian identity is the manager of the GoGo Café, a small restaurant that serves as both a gathering place for the Science Ninja Team and the home she shares with her adopted younger brother, Jinpei.

Jun's background is marked by loss from an early age. She never knew her parents, who are identified as being of Japanese and American heritage. Orphaned as a child, she was placed in the Shirayuki Orphanage. It was there, after a period of fleeing to the Jupiter Mountains, that she discovered a toddler whom she named Jinpei, and from that point on, she raised him as her own brother. The two eventually came under the guardianship of Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, which led to their recruitment into the Science Ninja Team. Different adaptations offer variations on her past; for instance, the original series has a debated account that her aunt also perished in a war, while the OVA series presents a version where her parents were victims of nuclear terrorism and she joined a motorcycle gang for protection in her early teens.

In terms of personality, Jun is defined by her bravery and fierce independence. She takes her duties as a team member with the utmost seriousness, facing the terrorist organization Galactor with a calm and strategic mind. Despite her tough exterior, she possesses a strong maternal instinct and a sensitive side, often looking out for the well-being of her teammates. In her free time when not working at the café, she enjoys riding her motorcycle, an activity that reflects her free-spirited nature. Her role on the team is highly specialized; she is the electronics and demolitions expert, demonstrating a particular affinity for explosives and hazardous materials.

Her relationships with other characters are a key part of her development. The most significant is her bond with Jinpei, for whom she acts as a surrogate mother, a relationship that balances genuine care with the typical sibling dynamics of teasing and minor arguments. She also harbors a complex romantic attachment to the team leader, Ken Washio. While she works closely with him and is often concerned for his well-being, his dedication to their mission frequently leaves her romantic feelings unreciprocated, much to her private irritation. Her relationship with the brooding Joe Asakura evolves as well, moving from tense interactions to a deeper camaraderie and mutual defense, particularly in later series when she staunchly defends his humanity after his transformation into a cyborg.

Throughout the various Gatchaman series, Jun's character undergoes subtle development. While she begins as a capable and valued member of the team, her emotional resilience is tested many times, including a heartbreaking incident where she is forced to confront and ultimately fire the missile that destroys a childhood friend who had joined Galactor. The OVA adaptation portrays a version of Jun who is more withdrawn and guarded due to the severe trauma of her past, showcasing a different facet of her inherent strength.

As a combatant, Jun employs a fighting style that combines agility with acrobatic kicks and proficiency in martial arts like karate and aikido. Her arsenal is distinctive and evolves across series. Her primary weapon in the original series is a reinforced yo-yo, which can be used as a whip, flail, or explosive device, a version of which is electrified in the OVA. In Gatchaman II, she switches to the Aurora Ribbon, a gymnastic ribbon used for grappling and whipping, and in Gatchaman Fighter, she wields the Elenettor, a bracelet on her forearm that fires energy beams. True to her role as a demolitions expert, she often conceals plastique explosives in everyday items such as the heels of her shoes and inside lipstick tubes.
