Description
Adrian Tepes, known as Alucard, is a central protagonist in the animated series. He is the son of Count Dracula and the human woman Lisa Tepes, making him a dhampir, a being caught between the worlds of humans and vampires. His chosen name, Alucard, is his father's name spelled backward, which symbolizes his opposition to Dracula's path of genocide.

Born in the mid-1450s, Alucard was raised in his father's castle. He was deeply influenced by his mother, Lisa, a kind and scientifically-minded woman who believed in helping humanity and taught her son to reject hatred. Nearly twenty years after his birth, his mother was falsely accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake by the Bishop of Wallachia. Driven by grief and rage, Dracula declared a war of extermination against all of humanity. When a nineteen-year-old Alucard confronted his father, begging him to only punish the guilty and leave innocents alone, Dracula refused. This led to a brutal fight in which Alucard was nearly killed, receiving a large scar across his chest before being forced to flee. He retreated to the catacombs beneath the city of Gresit, where he placed himself in a magical coffin to recover his strength. Over time, a legend spread of a sleeping soldier who would one day awaken to help a hunter and a scholar.

Alucard is portrayed as intelligent, calm, and composed, though he is often slow to show emotion. He carries an immense and "bottomless" sadness that stems from the loss of his mother and the duty he feels to stop his own father. Despite his vampiric heritage, he possesses a strong sense of justice and his mother's inherent kindness. He is respectful of strength and conviction, which he first sees in the vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and the Speaker magician Sypha Belnades. While he can be cold, formal, and sarcastic, he is not without a dry wit and a capacity for deep loyalty.

His primary motivation throughout the series is to honor his mother's memory by stopping Dracula's genocidal war. He believes his mother, a healer who was killed despite her good deeds, would not have wanted the innocent people of Wallachia to be slaughtered in her name. He initially hopes to reason with his father, but after it becomes clear that Dracula cannot be swayed, Alucard resolves to kill him, seeing it as a tragic necessity to prevent greater evil.

Alucard plays the role of a powerful and essential ally. His most significant relationship is with Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, who are the hunter and scholar foretold in the legend. Although he and Trevor initially clash and duel, they develop a deep, if bickering, bond of mutual respect and friendship. Alucard provides crucial knowledge about his father's castle and its mechanics, and he provides the raw power needed to fight Dracula's elite guards. Together, the trio storms Dracula's castle. In the final confrontation, a grief-stricken Dracula finally comes to his senses when he realizes he is about to kill his son, the last link to his beloved Lisa. He allows Alucard to stake him through the heart, ending his life.

After Dracula's death, Alucard undergoes significant development. Trevor convinces him to become the guardian of both Dracula's castle and the Belmont family's vast library of knowledge, rather than using the castle as his own tomb. He initially struggles with profound loneliness and grief. This is compounded by a traumatic betrayal by two vampire hunters, Sumi and Taka, whom he agrees to train. They eventually seduce and then attempt to kill him in their lust for power. Forced to kill them in self-defense, Alucard is left more isolated and cynical, even adopting his father's practice of impaling the bodies of intruders as a warning. Over time, he overcomes his isolation, stepping up to defend the villagers of Danesti from monsters and leading them back to his castle for safety. He finds a sense of community and purpose in this new role, forming a bond with the village leader, Greta, and slowly shedding his solitary nature. Centuries later, he reappears in the sequel series Nocturne, where he comes to the aid of Richter Belmont, continuing his long vigil against the forces of darkness.

As a dhampir, Alucard possesses a formidable array of supernatural abilities. He has superhuman strength, speed, agility, and durability, as well as a high tolerance for pain and a regenerative healing factor. He is immune to many human ailments, can survive in sunlight due to his human half, and does not appear to age. He is an exceptionally gifted and masterful swordsman, often wielding a magical sword that can be controlled with telekinesis and bursts into blue flames upon striking an enemy. He also possesses powerful dark magic. One of his signature abilities is shapeshifting, allowing him to transform into a wolf, a bat, and a cloud of mist, each form serving different strategic purposes. He can also levitate, teleport short distances, and use telekinesis to move objects with his mind. In Nocturne, he demonstrates the ability to use a powerful fire-based attack called Dark Inferno, a technique associated with his father.
