Description
Kairi Shishigou is a central character in Fate/Apocrypha, serving as the Master of the Red Faction's Saber, Mordred. He is a thirty-two-year-old freelance necromancer who operates independently of the traditional hierarchies of the Mages Association. Standing at 182 centimeters tall and weighing 97 kilograms, Kairi has a striking and intimidating appearance. He possesses a muscular build, keeps his brownish-yellow hair at shoulder length, and often wears a black leather jacket and dark sunglasses. His face is marked by three prominent scars near his right eye and a small patch of hair on his chin, a look he understands is formidable but does not fully grasp the degree of fear it instills in others. His outward appearance is so rough that he is frequently stopped by police for questioning, despite his Japanese origins, and even other magi tend to give him a wide berth.
Kairi is the seventh head of the Shishigou family. The family’s magical crest carries a powerful curse activated in his generation, which renders him sterile and makes it impossible for him to produce an heir. Attempts to transplant the crest onto an adopted daughter, a distant relative, resulted in the girl's death, a tragedy that haunts Kairi deeply. After this event, he left his family's path of pure research and became a wanderer, surviving as a bounty hunter and a magus for hire, which is referred to in the setting as a "magus killer" or simply a "magus for hire" distinct from a traditional magus. He lives as a mercenary, moving from battlefield to battlefield to recover the corpses of fallen mages and steal their magical crests. Despite his gruff and even ruthless profession, his personality is surprisingly calm, methodical, and observant. He has a pragmatic and cautious nature, preferring to gather intelligence and avoid unnecessary risks. While he can come across as cynical, he possesses a dry sense of humor and a genuine, if awkward, capacity for kindness. He is known to have a soft spot for children, which he considers his natural enemy likely due to his own painful history.
Kairi’s primary motivation for participating in the Great Holy Grail War in Trifas is not for personal power or glory. While he states his wish for the Holy Grail is for the prosperity of his clan, his true, unspoken desire is far more personal and poignant. He wishes to undo the death of his adopted daughter, the child who was lost when his family tried to transfer their crest to her. The Holy Grail represents a chance for him to reclaim the family and future that was stolen from him by the curse. However, through his journey, his motivations become intertwined with his role as a Master and a reluctant father figure.
Within the story of Fate/Apocrypha, Kairi is hired by the Mages Association to act as one of the seven Masters for the Red Faction. He uses a fragment of the Round Table as a catalyst and successfully summons Mordred as his Saber-class Servant. From the outset, he is distrustful of the Red Faction's de facto leader, Shirou Kotomine, and his Servant, Semiramis. Sensing danger, Kairi and Mordred refuse to join their alliance and instead operate as a rogue, independent unit for most of the war. This decision proves wise, as Shirou’s true plans are a threat to both factions. Throughout the conflict, Kairi fights alongside Mordred in several key battles, including a confrontation with the Black Faction's Berserker. He uses his cunning and experience to support his powerful but reckless Servant, often acting as a grounding influence. As the war reaches its climax, they assault Semiramis’s Hanging Gardens. When Mordred is incapacitated by Semiramis’s Hydra poison, Kairi makes a final, selfless choice. He creates a serum from the Hydra's venom he had previously processed, injects himself with it, and enters the poisoned chamber to save his Servant. He successfully administers the antidote to Mordred, but the strain and the antidote's own toxicity prove fatal for a human, and he dies shortly after, sharing a final cigarette with his partner.
The central relationship in Kairi’s life, and the one that defines his arc, is with his Servant, Mordred. Their bond transcends the typical Master-Servant contract. Kairi recognizes the anger and pain in Mordred, the bastard child of King Arthur who was rejected and was driven to rebellion. He sees a reflection of his own lonely, painful existence. In turn, Mordred, who despises being treated like a child, finds in Kairi a figure who accepts her completely without judgment, a stark contrast to the father who refused to acknowledge her. Their interactions are often blunt and argumentative, but they are underlaid with a deep mutual respect and a genuine, unspoken affection. They operate with the chaotic and loyal dynamic of outlaw partners. For Kairi, Mordred becomes a surrogate daughter, a second chance at a family he thought he had lost forever. In caring for her, he fulfills his deeper wish not through the Grail, but through the act of being a father.
As a magus, Kairi specializes in necromancy, a discipline that falls under the umbrella of both the Cursing and Spiritual Evocation departments of the Mages Association. He is a master of "animal and corpse processing," using the remains of magical beasts and fallen mages to create his tools. His combat style is highly unorthodox for a magus, blending his necromantic arts with modern firearms and explosives, a pragmatic approach that prioritizes results over tradition. Notable examples of his work include a short-barreled shotgun used as a Mystic Code to fire magical rounds, hand grenades fashioned from processed human hearts, and various items made from animal parts like monkeys' paws and owl eyes. His most notable creation is a Mystic Code forged from a young Hydra he received as payment, crafting a venomous blade capable of killing even a Servant, as well as an antidote serum from the same source. His practical, battle-hardened approach to magecraft is considered incredibly effective, even if his methods are seen as crude or disgusting by the established elite of the Clock Tower.
