Description
Lancer of Red is the Lancer-class Servant of the Red Faction in the Great Holy Grail War. His true identity is Karna, the hero of charity from the ancient Indian epic the Mahabharata. He was born to the human princess Kunti and the sun god Surya. Kunti abandoned him as an infant out of fear and shame, and he was raised by a charioteer family. From his divine father he received a golden armor that made him nearly invulnerable. Despite his low birth, Karna became a renowned warrior and ally of the Kaurava princes, eventually clashing with his half‑brother Arjuna in the Kurukshetra War. He was known for his unwavering adherence to the principle of charity, refusing any request made of him. This trait led him to give away his golden armor to the god Indra, who in turn granted him the divine spear Vasavi Shakti. Karna fell in battle after losing his armor, suffering multiple curses, and being abandoned by his allies.

In the Great Holy Grail War, Karna was initially summoned by one of the five puppet Masters of the Red Faction, but soon came under the command of Shirou Kotomine. He did not fully acknowledge Shirou as his Master; rather he continued to serve out of a sense of duty to protect the original Masters, whose consciousnesses had been stolen. Karna was a loyal and honest Servant, but his aloof and direct manner of speaking often made him misunderstood. He possessed a moderate and thoughtful personality, a natural‑born saint who accepted both enemies and allies without prejudice. He saw all people like flowers, each with their own worth. His flaw was that he spoke too little rather than too much, failing to convey the kindness he truly felt. He had no wish for the Holy Grail and participated in the war solely to fulfill his duty as a summoned hero.

Karna’s notable abilities include his golden armor, Kavacha and Kundala, a powerful defensive Noble Phantasm that is light itself given form and nearly impossible to destroy. He also possesses Mana Burst (Flames), a skill that constantly shrouds his weapons in blazing fire. His primary offensive Noble Phantasm as Lancer is Brahmastra Kundala, an anti‑country projectile that, when combined with his heat attribute, delivers an impact comparable to a nuclear weapon. His ultimate weapon is Vasavi Shakti, a single‑use spear of light that can kill even gods, obtained by sacrificing his golden armor. Karna also has the passive skill Discernment of the Poor, which grants him insight into others’ true natures, and Uncrowned Arms Mastery, which downplays his combat rank until his identity is revealed.

In the story, Karna played a central role in the battles between the Red and Black factions. He faced off against several opponents, notably Siegfried and later his eternal rival Arjuna. He saw in Siegfried a pure warrior agonized by duty, reminiscent of the bowman he had fought in his past life. Karna’s key relationships include his complicated bond with Shirou Kotomine, whom he obeyed out of necessity rather than trust; his deep enmity with Arjuna, rooted in their shared lineage and fated conflict; and his brief connection with his mother Kunti, whose courage in confessing her abandonment moved him. Throughout the war, Karna remained a figure of tragic nobility, using his immense power without arrogance and ultimately accepting his role as a weapon for his Master’s goals. His development is subtle—he never abandons his principles, but his interactions with other Servants and his Master hint at his desire for genuine understanding.
