Description
Kairi Sisigou is a freelance necromancer and a master of the Red Faction in the Great Holy Grail War. He is a man in his early thirties with a tall, muscular build and a gruff appearance, characterized by his brownish-yellow hair, a small beard on his chin, a noticeable scar by his right eye, and an ever-present pair of sunglasses. His typical attire is a black leather jacket, and his intimidating look often leads to him being mistaken for an outlaw or stopped by police, a stark contrast to the more refined appearance of traditional mages.

Kairi is the seventh-generation head of the Sisigou family. The family’s revival was tied to a curse that manifested in him, rendering him unable to father a biological child. In an attempt to preserve the family's magic crest and lineage, he adopted a distant relative as his daughter. Tragically, the attempt to transplant his magic crest into her failed, as the crest had become poisonous, leading to her death. This event devastated him and led him to abandon his formal studies at the Clock Tower, the Association's headquarters, to become a wandering bounty hunter. Instead of pursuing research, he now makes a living by roaming battlefields, recovering corpses of mages and plundering their magical crests.

Despite his fearsome exterior, Kairi is portrayed as a calm, pragmatic, and remarkably sharp-minded individual. His personality is a blend of a hardened mercenary and a surprisingly sentimental man. He carries an old photograph of himself with his late adopted daughter, revealing a deep, underlying affection and a sense of loss that drives many of his actions. He is a heavy smoker with a taste for a rare brand of Taiwanese cigarettes. He avoids unnecessary risks and is distrustful of authority figures, most notably refusing to cooperate with Shirou Kotomine, the overseer of the Red Faction, due to a gut feeling that the priest cannot be trusted.

As a mage, Kairi is a specialist in necromancy, the branch of magic dealing with death and the manipulation of corpses. His skills lie not in vast theoretical knowledge but in practical combat application and resourcefulness. He is considered a first-rate "magus killer" but only a second-rate traditional magus. He uses a shortened shotgun as a medium for his spells, firing cursed bullets. His other tools include hand grenades crafted from human hearts and other potent, if gruesome, magical trinkets made from animal parts. His most notable creation is a serum derived from the Hydra, a mythical serpent whose venom is lethal even to Servants.

In the Great Holy Grail War, Kairi is hired by the Mage's Association to fight for the Red Faction. Using a catalyst provided by the Association—a fragment of the Round Table—he successfully summons the Servant Saber of Red, who is later revealed to be the rebellious knight Mordred. Unlike other master-servant pairs, Kairi and Mordred share a notably amicable and understanding relationship. Recognizing the similarities in their headstrong, rebellious natures, they operate independently of the rest of their faction. His primary motivation for joining the war is his wish for the Holy Grail: initially stated as restoring his family's prosperity, his true, heartfelt desire is simply to undo the death of his adopted daughter.

Throughout the story, Kairi acts as both a strategic anchor and a supportive partner to Mordred. He uses his command spells not to control her, but to assist her in battle, such as teleporting her away from a deadly self-destruct attack. As the war progresses and Shirou Kotomine’s true, world-altering plan is revealed, Kairi and Mordred fully break away from the Red Faction to oppose him. In the final battle against the Assassin of Red, Semiramis, Kairi is nearly killed by her deadly Hydra poison. In his final act, he injects himself with a counter-serum he had prepared and rushes into a gas-filled chamber to save Mordred. The effort kills him, but it allows Mordred to live long enough to finish their mission. His character arc concludes with him accepting his past and choosing a meaningful death in combat alongside his Servant, embodying the mercenary philosophy he lived by.
