Description
Free de la Hoya is a prominent blader from Spain who initially serves as the leader of the team BC Sol before a complex journey takes him to the American team, the Raging Bulls, and eventually back to BC Sol as its leader. He is recognized as a member of the elite Big Five and has held the title of the world's number one blader.

In terms of appearance, Free has a fair complexion with spiked, messy orange hair that features a distinctive red streak. His eyes are dark, with his pupils not typically visible. Reflecting his generally carefree attitude toward appearances, his casual style often includes a loose yellow tank top and light brown jeans. On his left arm, he wears a long, dark teal fingerless glove fastened with a brown belt and golden buckle.

Free's personality is defined by a sense of laziness and a carefree demeanor. He often appears with a bored expression, his head tilted slightly to the left, showing little interest in battles or opponents he does not consider challenging. This lack of enthusiasm extends to his behavior as a teammate; he is known to be sarcastic or occasionally rude, ignores others, and shows no concern for being late to important events. He does not even use a launcher against less skilled bladers, preferring to spin his beyblade with his hand. Despite this, he maintains a high level of physical fitness, able to perform one hundred sprints without effort or move a boulder with a rope. Below his apathetic exterior, he is a keen observer with deep knowledge of beyblade strengths and weaknesses. He also has a noticeable fondness for animals, often spending his spare time in a forest with a deer companion, where he shows a more sincere and gentle side.

His motivations and role in the story are driven by an initial sense of superiority as the world's strongest blader, which is challenged after suffering his first defeat at the hands of Lui Shirosagi. This loss profoundly impacts him, causing him to leave BC Sol and join the Raging Bulls, as he believes Valt Aoi has the potential to make BC Sol a better team without him. His journey becomes about regaining his title and rediscovering a sense of respect for other bladers and the sport itself. His central role in the International Blader's Cup sees him reclaim his title by defeating Lui Shirosagi, only to be forced to forfeit his semi-final match against Valt Aoi due to a severe injury in his right arm.

Throughout the series, Free undergoes notable development. He begins as an aloof and nearly untouchable champion, but his loss to Lui humbles him. A significant moment in his growth comes when he battles Shasa Guten, who demands rematch after rematch despite losing. Inspired by her dedication, he offers her advice, and afterwards, he shakes her hand—an action he had never done with anyone before, signaling a positive shift in his attitude. Following his injury against Valt, he remains involved in the story by helping Valt's friends train for a subsequent battle. In later series, he returns with new evolutions of his beyblade, including Geist Fafnir and eventually Vanish Fafnir, continuing to be a formidable and evolving presence.

Key relationships shape his character considerably. Kristina Kuroda is a childhood friend who has always cared for him, and their history involves battling each other as children. Valt Aoi is a rival and friend whom Free initially dismisses but comes to respect, ultimately believing in Valt's potential. His rivalry with Lui Shirosagi is central to his competitive drive, as Lui is the first person to ever defeat him. He also has a fraught history with former teammate Joshua Burns, whom he defeats after Joshua's overconfidence leads to his downfall.

Free's notable abilities in battle are centered on his strategic ingenuity and his signature special moves. His most famous technique is Drain Spin, where his beyblade, Fafnir, uses rubber on its Energy Layer to absorb an opponent's attack, converting that power into its own speed and strength while damaging the opponent. Another significant move is Nothing Break, where Free launches with such immense power that the downforce causes Fafnir to stick to the center of the stadium, deflecting attacks before receiving a massive boost in speed and power for a counterattack. His battle style is defined by these absorption-based tactics, allowing him to turn an opponent's power against them.
