Description
Dorothy is a central figure in the spy team operating within the divided London. Her real name is Daisy MacBean, but she uses "Dorothy," her mother's name, as her alias. She was born in the territories of the former Kingdom of Albion and carries a deeply troubled past that shapes her present actions. Her father, Danny, was once a skilled steam engineer, but after losing his hand in an accident, he became a bitter and violent alcoholic. This abuse drove Dorothy's mother to leave the family. When Dorothy was thirteen, she could no longer endure her father's treatment and ran away from home, an act that coincided with the London Revolution that split the city with a wall. To survive in this chaotic new world, she joined the Commonwealth's spy agency, Control, and became an operative, eventually taking on the role of leader for a team of undercover agents at Queen's Mayfair Academy.

In terms of personality, Dorothy presents herself as a cheerful, outgoing, and somewhat rough-around-the-edges individual. She is often seen as the "cool big sister" of her group, a dependable leader who looks after her teammates with a caring, if sometimes weary, attitude. Despite her tough exterior and professional skills as a spy, she is surprisingly emotional and values genuine friendship deeply, a trait she sometimes considers a weakness in her line of work. This inner conflict between her duty and her humanity is a recurring struggle. She is also a heavy drinker, frequently seen with a flask and known for her love of alcohol to the point of incorporating it into her undercover tactics. Dorothy also lies about her age, maintaining a cover story that she is seventeen when in reality she is twenty, the oldest member of her team.

Dorothy's motivations are less idealistic than some of her comrades. Her path to becoming a spy was not driven by a grand political ideology but by the simple, desperate need for survival and a place to belong after fleeing her broken home. This pragmatic foundation gives her a grounded perspective. Her role within the story is primarily that of the team's leader and the main liaison with their superiors at Control, communicating directly with their handler known as "L". She is the operational anchor of the group, tasked not only with executing missions but also with managing the quirks and conflicts of her diverse teammates. Her loyalty to the Commonwealth, however, is tested when she receives a secret order to assassinate Princess Charlotte as part of a larger plot against the Queen. Dorothy is immediately uncomfortable with this directive, and her reluctance ultimately leads her to work against the assassination, demonstrating where her true loyalties lie.

Her key relationships are central to her character. Her closest bond is with Ange le Carré, a fellow spy and friend she has known since their time together at a spy training academy, and possibly even earlier at an orphanage. They share a deep history and mutual trust, though Dorothy often finds herself exasperated by Ange's cold and enigmatic nature. Another significant relationship is with her father, Danny. Despite the years of abuse, her feelings for him are complex and unresolved. During a mission to retrieve a hidden code, she is forced to confront him, finding him now working as a morgue attendant, still an alcoholic and a shadow of his former self. While she expresses anger and disdain, she also shows moments of lingering attachment, such as knowing a song he used to love, and her own drinking habit mirrors his. This encounter is marked by tragedy, as her father is killed shortly after by another agent, a fate Dorothy remains unaware of.

Dorothy undergoes notable development throughout the story, defined by a shift from a spy who follows orders to one who actively questions them. Her internal struggle with the dehumanizing principles of espionage, particularly her desire for authentic connection, becomes a source of both strength and conflict. She worries that her sentimental nature makes her a poor spy, but it is precisely this humanity that drives her to defy direct orders and protect her friends when the situation demands it. Her development is one of embracing her role as a leader not just of an intelligence cell, but as a protector of a found family.

Regarding her abilities, Dorothy is a highly skilled and versatile operative. She is an expert driver, capable of handling the team's unique and robust steam automobile in high-speed chases and precarious escapes. In combat, she is formidable, with physical prowess that allows her to take down multiple adult men at once, with only teammates Ange and Chise ranking above her in close-quarters skill. Her primary weapon is a distinctive, custom-made revolving shotgun, a break-action firearm with a rotating cylinder. She also makes effective use of her appearance, employing honey trapping and seduction as key tools for infiltration and distraction. Her ever-present flask of alcohol serves not just for personal enjoyment but also as a tool to lower inhibitions and enhance her acting skills during such seductive missions.
