Description
Aya Kōda is a civilian character who appears in the anime Bungo Stray Dogs: Hitori Ayumu. She is introduced as a spirited young girl with a strong sense of justice. Her appearance is distinct, featuring red hair cut in a bob with hairpins on both sides. She typically wears a tan duffel coat with off-center fastenings over a yellow dress, complemented by violet tights and pink shoes.

In terms of personality, Aya is energetic, stubborn, and self-assured. She proudly calls herself a warrior of justice and claims to practice karate every day to uphold this ideal. This confidence makes her bold and persistent, as she refuses to take no for an answer and is not afraid to make fun of older individuals, including the Armed Detective Agency member Kunikida Doppo. Despite her youthful bravado, she possesses a deep-seated value for helping others and demonstrates a remarkable willingness to sacrifice herself for the greater good.

Aya’s primary motivation stems from her desire to be a force for good. She becomes directly involved in a dangerous situation after a stranger hands her a suitcase at a train station, which she initially assumes is a lost item. When Kunikida realizes the suitcase contains a bomb and disposes of it, Aya feels angry at being used by the culprit. Instead of retreating, she insists on helping Kunikida track down the bomber, dragging the detective along in her determined pursuit of justice.

Her role in the story is as a catalyst and a civilian partner to Kunikida during a single case. The two of them track the bomber into a train tunnel, where the situation turns dire. The culprit, Katsura, manages to strap a bomb directly onto Aya, putting Kunikida in an impossible position. He is forced to choose between trying to save her or stopping a train from being blown up. Kunikida apologizes to Aya, implying he cannot save her, and she courageously accepts her fate, stating that her sacrifice is for the sake of everyone else.

The key relationship in Aya's story is with Kunikida Doppo. Throughout their investigation, she proves to be both a nuisance and a determined ally, pushing him forward. After the conflict is resolved and both are healed by Yosano Akiko from injuries sustained in the explosion, Aya shows a playful interest in Kunikida, implying that she would not mind becoming his girlfriend. Kunikida gently turns her down, stating that she does not meet the specific requirements he has listed for an ideal partner.

Regarding her development, Aya does not undergo a dramatic transformation but rather demonstrates the strength of her existing character. Faced with a life-threatening choice, her stated ideals are put to the ultimate test, and she proves her sincerity by willingly accepting death to save others. Her final interaction with Kunikida shows a return to her cheeky and confident nature, unfazed by the life-threatening event she just survived. As for notable abilities, aside from her proclaimed daily karate practice, Aya does not possess any supernatural powers or unique combat skills; her primary strengths are her courage, stubbornness, and strong moral compass.
