Description
Akiho Shinomoto is a transfer student who joins Sakura Kinomoto's class at Tomoeda Middle School at the start of the Clear Card arc. She is a girl of petite stature with fair skin, large blue eyes, and shoulder-length ash-blonde or light blonde hair styled with distinctive curls. Her birthday is September 18th. She is quiet and polite, often speaking formally to her classmates, but after befriending Sakura, she reveals a more cheerful and friendly side. Akiho shares many personality traits with Sakura, including a kind and warm-hearted nature, and the two bond quickly over their shared dislike of konnyaku. She is also somewhat naive and gullible, easily believing the tall tales told by their classmate Takashi Yamazaki.
Akiho comes from a complex and painful background. She was born into one of the oldest and most powerful magician clans in Europe, but unlike the rest of her family, she was born with no magical abilities of her own. Her parents died shortly after her birth, and she was neglected and ostracized by her clan for her lack of power. In her loneliness, she turned to books for comfort. When a magical British association confirmed that she was like a blank book with no magic of her own, the clan and the association devised a plan to use her as a living magical tool. They filled her with countless spells and magical records, essentially turning her into a living grimoire, a process that risked destroying her soul. To facilitate this, she was made to travel the world, reading and absorbing magic from books in various countries, including Hong Kong, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, before finally coming to Japan. Her caretaker and guardian during these travels was Yuna D. Kaito, a wizard from the association who eventually went against its wishes and fled with her to Tomoeda, where they reside in the mansion formerly owned by Eriol Hiiragizawa.
Akiho's primary motivation is a longing for connection and a normal, happy life. Having been deprived of a family and genuine friendships for most of her childhood, she deeply cherishes the bonds she begins to form in Tomoeda, especially with Sakura. She harbors strong romantic feelings for her guardian, Yuna D. Kaito, often blushing in his presence and attempting to learn new skills, like cooking, to please him. Her role in the story is initially that of a friendly new classmate, but she is gradually revealed to be deeply connected to the mysterious Clear Card incidents and the strange dreams Sakura has been experiencing. In the anime adaptation, Akiho herself is the hooded figure that appears in Sakura's dreams, using magic unconsciously while asleep, such as creating barriers, flying glass orbs, and launching fireballs. She is also the owner of a mysterious, untitled book called Alice in Clockland, which she can read due to her unique upbringing and which allows her to influence Sakura's dreams.
Her key relationships define much of her character arc. Her friendship with Sakura Kinomoto is the most significant, as Sakura is her first true friend in Tomoeda and their bond becomes central to the story. The two are noted to look very similar, having the same height and physique, and even their names evoke complementary seasons: Sakura meaning cherry blossoms of spring, and Akiho containing the kanji for autumn. Akiho also becomes friends with Sakura's other companions, including Tomoyo Daidouji, who shares her love for singing and encourages her to join the choir club, and Syaoran Li, who is initially suspicious but grows to care for her. Her relationship with Yuna D. Kaito is complex and pivotal; while she sees him as her most important person and feels deep affection for him, he is often distant and focused on a hidden agenda to protect her at any cost, even rewriting reality itself. She also carries with her a stuffed rabbit named Momo, unaware that it is actually a living, sentient magical being acting as her guardian.
Throughout the Clear Card arc, Akiho undergoes significant development. She starts as a lonely, isolated girl who has been used as a tool by her own family, but through her friendship with Sakura and the others, she learns what it means to have people who care for her. The truth of her origins as a living magical book and the dangers she faces come to light. Ultimately, she is freed from the control of her clan and the magical association, and she is welcomed as an honorary member of the Kinomoto family, finally finding the loving home she never had.
Despite having no innate magic of her own, Akiho possesses notable abilities derived from her transformation into a living magical tool. She can wield powerful magical relics, most notably the book Alice in Clockland, which was given to her by Kaito. Reading from this book can affect the dreams of others. In the anime, she demonstrates the ability to use various forms of magic, but only while she is asleep and unaware, suggesting that the countless spells contained within her body activate unconsciously, especially during times of strong emotion. Her body acts as a repository for the magic of countless magicians, a power she has no control over but which makes her a unique and powerful existence in the magical world.
