Description
Call is a young girl from the Nanorace, a class of people whose genes contain nanomachines granting them special abilities. In the future society depicted in Redash -GEARWORLD-, the Nanorace is controlled and faces discrimination from the Purerace, normal humans without these modifications. The story begins with Call on the run, being persistently pursued by a trio of hunters named Safari, Stripe, and their leader Deny. Her flight leads her to hide in the van of two other Nanos, Beck and Tyger, as they wait for their turn to use the Parallel Machine to travel to other dimensions for work.
In terms of personality, Call presents herself as resourceful, spontaneous, and energetic. When discovered by Beck and Tyger after sneaking into their van, she quickly pleads with them to let her join their group, offering her skills in exchange for their protection. To convince them, she claims to possess a power called Angel Ears, which she says is a form of echolocation that can be used to find valuable targets known as Magicicadas. Her introduction involves performing a flashy declaration of her ability, a moment that Beck finds dubious and questions. This scene frames her as someone who can think on her feet and is not above using a strategic performance to achieve her goal of safety. She also half-heartedly repeats the societal justification for the prejudice against her kind, noting that Nanos are considered unreliable for important jobs because their powers could malfunction at any time, though she may simply be parroting this idea rather than believing it.
Call's primary motivation is survival and escape from her pursuers, Safari, Stripe, and Deny. To achieve this, she seeks to become part of Beck and Tyger’s unit, recognizing that their skills as hunters offer her the best chance of evading capture. As the story unfolds, her initial need for self-preservation evolves. After Beck and Tyger risk themselves to help her, and as she learns about the loss of their former companion, Lucy, Call is inspired to move beyond her self-interested instincts and take a genuine risk to protect her new friends.
Call’s role in the story is as the catalyst for the plot. Her sudden arrival and the danger that follows her force the reluctant Beck and Tyger to become involved in a chase that takes them to the clockwork world, a parallel dimension. She becomes the third member of the group, filling a role left vacant by a previous female member named Lucy, making her the only female in the central trio for most of the narrative. Her presence tests the dynamic between the two established partners, pushing them from a routine of hunting for money into a more dangerous, reactive situation that eventually strengthens their bond as a team.
The key relationship in Call’s story is with Beck and Tyger. Initially, Beck is unwelcoming, ordering her to leave and being suspicious of her claims. Tyger is more passive but equally hesitant. However, the shared danger of the pursuit forces them to cooperate. As they travel together to the clockwork world and fend off attacks from Safari and Stripe, Call begins to earn their trust, and importantly, she learns to trust them in return. The trio's connection is solidified by the end of their journey, having become true companions.
Call demonstrates notable development in her character arc. She begins as a potentially deceitful figure, claiming powers and making promises out of desperation. However, the willingness of Beck and Tyger to put themselves in harm's way for her changes her. The narrative highlights The Power of Trust as the core of her growth, showing how their sacrifice inspires her to shed her self-serving attitude and risk herself to save Beck when he is vulnerable and struggling against his enemies. This shift indicates her transformation from a fugitive seeking a shield into a loyal teammate willing to fight alongside her friends.
Call’s notable ability, or at least the one she publicly claims, is called Angel Ears. She describes it as a form of echolocation that would allow her to detect Magicicadas, the creatures that hunters pursue for money in parallel worlds. While the authenticity of this specific power is treated with skepticism by Beck, who accuses her of simply yelling, the act of calling out her attack is part of her effort to appear as a useful Nano to the more experienced hunters. In a twist of fate, the power of super-hearing she pretends to have was actually the real ability of their lost comrade, Lucy.
