Description
Gilbert Bougainvillea is a central character from the anime Violet Evergarden, where he serves as a major in the Leidenschaftlich army. He comes from the distinguished Bougainvillea noble family, which has produced high-ranking officers for generations. Physically, Gilbert is a tall man, standing at 185 centimeters, with neatly styled dark hair and distinctive emerald-green eyes that are frequently noted for their striking color. He is typically seen in his military uniform, and after the war, he sustains severe injuries that result in the loss of his right eye and one of his arms, requiring an eyepatch and a metal prosthetic.

In terms of personality, Gilbert embodies a calm, reserved, and collected demeanor. Despite his composed exterior, he struggles internally with expressing and receiving love, often feeling constrained by the expectations of his noble and military background to suppress his true emotions. This repression leads to inner turmoil, manifesting as guilt, regret, and frustration, which he frequently keeps hidden. Despite his occasional chilliness, he possesses a deep sense of warmth and empathy, prioritising the well-being of those he loves above his own. Unlike his more arrogant and merciless brother, Dietfried, Gilbert has a strong sense of right and wrong and denounces actions he finds morally repugnant. He is also noted for being a man of real character, someone who is not merely a pampered noble but a compassionate individual who cherishes his loved ones.

Gilbert's primary role in the story is as the most important person in the life of the protagonist, Violet Evergarden. Their relationship begins when his older brother, Dietfried, gives the young, feral child to Gilbert as a gift, expecting him to use her solely as a tool of war. However, Gilbert immediately sees her differently, embracing her and becoming her guardian. He is the one who gives her the name Violet, hoping she would grow into a woman as beautiful as the flower. Over the next four years, he teaches her how to speak, read, write, and understand language, effectively becoming her mentor and the first person to ever show her kindness. Gilbert's deepest motivation is his wish for Violet to live a free, happy, and peaceful life as a normal human being, rather than as a weapon bound to follow orders.

Key relationships define Gilbert's character. His bond with Violet Evergarden is the most significant, as he is the only person who ever treated her as a human being rather than a mere instrument of death. For her part, Violet is intensely devoted to him, to the point of obsession, prioritising his health and safety above her own. It is his final words to her, a confession of love, that become the driving force behind her journey to understand human emotion. Gilbert also shares a close friendship with his comrade, Claudia Hodgins, to whom he entrusts Violet's care should anything happen to him. In contrast, his relationship with his older brother, Dietfried, is more strained, as Gilbert disapproves of his brother's cruel and manipulative nature.

Throughout the narrative, Gilbert undergoes significant development, primarily conveyed through his absence and flashbacks. During a pivotal and fierce final battle of the war, he is gravely injured. Believing he is about to die, he orders Violet to flee and live freely, confessing his love for her before seemingly being killed when a fortress collapses. However, he survives but loses his right eye and an arm. Overcome with guilt for the pain he believes he has caused Violet and fearing that his presence would bind her to her past as a soldier, he makes the difficult decision to remain hidden and let everyone, including Violet, believe he is dead. It is only much later, after learning that Violet has truly become her own person, living freely and understanding love, that he allows himself to be found, leading to their eventual reunion. In the anime film, after the war, he is shown to have been living in seclusion on a remote island, working as a schoolteacher before finally reuniting with Violet.

As an army major and the commander of a special operations unit, Gilbert is a highly capable and decorated soldier who rises through the ranks without fear or anxiety, believing in a destiny tailored to his abilities. He commands respect and fights on the front lines of the war's most intense battles. His notable abilities lie not in superhuman feats but in his strategic mind, leadership, and his profound, albeit complex, capacity for empathy and love, which ultimately becomes his most defining trait.
