Description
Jack the Ripper is the captain of the Green Mantis squad of the Magic Knights in the Clover Kingdom. He is a tall, lean man standing at 197 centimeters, with gold eyes and medium-length black hair. A distinctive, thin red mark, either a scar or a birthmark, runs down the left side of his face from his forehead to his chin, crossing over his left eye and mouth.
True to his namesake, Jack possesses an aggressive and battle-hungry personality. He is almost always seen with a wide, unsettling grin, as he genuinely enjoys fighting and the act of cutting things. A notable habit he displays is running his tongue along the magical blades he creates. He has an arrogant and demanding side, often treating his subordinates, like Sekke Bronzazza, in a high-handed manner. Despite his fearsome and unpredictable nature, Jack is deeply loyal to the Clover Kingdom and takes his role as a protector very seriously.
Jack was born a commoner and the son of a hunter. His early life was marked by tragedy; when he was thirteen years old, his father was killed by a bear while hunting in the mountains. Jack avenged his father's death by hunting and killing the same bear, an event that forged his fierce, independent spirit and eventually led him to join the Magic Knights.
As a Magic Knight Captain, Jack's primary motivation is the thrill of combat. He seeks to test his strength against powerful opponents and takes immense satisfaction in overcoming any defense. He has stated that he prefers to fight an enemy when they are at their best, as it would be no fun to rip them to pieces otherwise. This desire to challenge himself is a core driver of his actions. He is also motivated by a sense of duty, as he actively incorporates commoners into his own squad, understanding the struggles they face from his own upbringing.
Jack's most significant relationship is with Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls. The two share a fierce and long-standing rivalry, often bickering and arguing over trivial matters. Yami has nicknamed Jack the "Vertical Weirdo" and "Long Man," referencing his lean frame. Despite their constant squabbling, they have a deep, unspoken respect for one another's strength. When Yami was captured by the Dark Triad, Jack was among the first to act, proving that their bond goes beyond simple competition. They have fought alongside each other on numerous occasions, and their contrasting slashing and dark magic styles complement each other well in battle.
Throughout the story, Jack plays a key role as one of the Clover Kingdom's strongest defenders. He participates in all major conflicts, including the fight against the reincarnated elves and the invasion of the Spade Kingdom. During the elf incident, he fought alongside Yami and Finral Roulacase, where his adaptability proved crucial in cutting through the spatial magic of an elf-possessed Langris Vaude. Later, during the Spade Kingdom Raid, he was selected by Nacht Faust as a member of the elite team to confront the Dark Triad. His development in this arc is significant, as he evolved his magic to cut through Dante Zogratis's body magic and even his regeneration, turning the tide of a desperate battle and earning the respect of commoner magic knights like Magna Swing and Zora Ideale.
Jack the Ripper's notable ability is his Slash Magic (or Severing Magic). This magic allows him to create large, scythe-like blades on his arms, which he uses to cut his targets. The unique and most powerful characteristic of his magic is its incredible adaptability; as he clashes with an opponent, the nature of his slashing magic changes and sharpens to match their specific magical defenses. This ability allows him to eventually cut through almost anything, including the spatial magic, gravity magic, and even the high-level body magic of a Devil host. His ultimate technique is known as Death Scythe: Lunatic Slash, where he unleashes an aggressive and brutal flurry of consecutive slashes. Combined with his immense magic power as a captain and physical reinforcement magic, Jack is one of the most offensively dangerous fighters in the series.
