Description
Ango Sakaguchi is a government operative within Japan’s Special Abilities Division, specializing in cases involving individuals with supernatural talents. His ability, Discourse on Decadence, allows him to extract memories and information from objects or locations through physical contact, a tool he uses extensively for intelligence operations. Under government orders, he infiltrated the Port Mafia as a spy before being tasked by mafia leader Mori Ougai to penetrate the militant group Mimic, making him a triple agent. This deception played a pivotal role in the Dark Era incident, where his covert actions fractured his friendships with Osamu Dazai and Sakunosuke Oda. Ango’s strategic negotiation of a truce between the Port Mafia and the government to eliminate Mimic inadvertently caused Oda’s death, permanently severing his ties to Dazai. Tall and slender, he has short dark hair, circular glasses, and a mole above his lip, typically dressed in a pale brown double-breasted coat and matching trousers. Though he outwardly complies with governmental directives, he privately critiques utilitarian policies that sacrifice individuals for societal stability, and his moral tension drives him to covertly aid the Armed Detective Agency. During the Guild Arc, he begrudgingly allies with Dazai, though a staged car crash engineered by Dazai leaves him gravely injured, underscoring their fractured dynamic. Later, he helps secure Kyoka Izumi’s legal pardon, decrypts communications, and manipulates prison surveillance to assist Dazai against groups like the Decay of the Angel. Personal quirks include favoring unagi over sea cucumbers and a childhood speech impediment. His evolution from a bureaucratic agent to an ethically conflicted operative is marked by stoicism and glimpses of vulnerability, as he balances pragmatism, remorse, and a quiet need for atonement.
