Description
Botan is a central figure in the Donten ni Warau narrative, particularly within the events of Utakata ni Warau, and her origins reach back centuries before the main story. She is a shikigami, a type of familiar or spiritual servant, who was summoned by the Abeno clan roughly six hundred years prior to the Meiji era. Her primary and most critical mission, assigned at the time of her creation, is to assist in the sealing of a great and malevolent entity known as Orochi.

By the time of the Meiji period, Botan has taken on the role of a schoolteacher. In this era, she actively seeks to help the Kumo brothers, who are central characters in the main Donten ni Warau storyline. Despite her long existence, she maintains a calm and duty-driven demeanor, though there is a profound sense of emotional isolation that comes with her nature as a non-human entity created for a specific purpose. Her own words reveal a deep-seated belief that she is merely a tool, created to be used, and that as a monster created by the Abe clan, concepts like love or pain hold no true meaning for her. She sees herself as an existence where such emotions are irrelevant, a conviction that shapes her interactions and her worldview.

Her motivations are largely defined by her original mission and her sense of purpose as a shikigami. However, her long history is deeply intertwined with one particular member of the Abeno clan, a man named Hirari Abeno. Hirari met Botan when he was still a child, and he fell in love with her because she was the first person to genuinely look at him as a person, treating him with sincerity and without the cruelty or indifference he had known. He was captivated by her eyes, which he described as being filled with conviction, pride, and without a single lie. For Botan, this relationship is complex; she acknowledges Hirari's feelings but keeps him at a distance with reminders of her true, inhuman nature. Following a past victory over Orochi, she made the difficult decision to erase all of Hirari's memories of her, believing it was necessary for them to part ways. Despite this, a vow between them persisted across three hundred years, with Hirari continuing to dream of her every night and promising to search for his lost love, even knowing she is not human.

Her role in the story often places her in a position of being both protector and protected. While she is a capable fighter, as seen when she easily defeats her attackers, she is also the focus of Hirari's unwavering devotion. Her relationship with Hirari is the key driver of her personal development. Though she initially insists she cannot feel love, her actions speak to a deep, unspoken connection. She waits for him and, when questioned, defends his honesty, stating that he does not lie to her. This suggests an internal conflict between her identity as a created tool and the genuine bond she shares with Hirari. The tragic dimension of her character is highlighted by Hirari's fear of forgetting her, a fate she herself set in motion by erasing his memories. Her final, poignant wish before potentially disappearing is a simple, human one: to see a landscape illuminated by sunshine.

Notable abilities of Botan stem directly from her nature as a shikigami. She possesses combat skills sufficient to defeat multiple ninja pursuers without much apparent effort. As a spiritual being, she has also demonstrated the power to manipulate memories, specifically removing all trace of herself from Hirari's mind to protect him or to facilitate their separation. Her agelessness, having existed for over six centuries while maintaining a youthful appearance, is another fundamental aspect of her supernatural existence, which she herself points out to Hirari as proof of her inhumanity.
