Description
Mido is a human woman who lives with her two sons, Lang and Deol, on a goat farm in the village of Helm. She is a widow; her husband was killed years earlier by a Renato dragon that had contracted the Red Eye disease. When Maquia, a young Iorph refugee, arrives in Helm carrying the human infant she has adopted and named Ariel, Mido takes them both into her home without hesitation. She becomes the first person to teach Maquia how to care for a human baby, offering practical guidance and everyday wisdom that Maquia relies on during Ariel’s early childhood. Mido is a kind and motherly figure, warm in her hospitality but capable of being firm when needed. She is also resourceful and reliable, helping Maquia connect with a cloth merchant to sell the Hibiol fabric she weaves. Her primary role in the story is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that allows Maquia to begin her journey of motherhood. Through her actions, Mido demonstrates the importance of found family and community support, embodying the theme of kindness extended across cultural and racial lines. Her influence is most visible during the first years of Ariel’s life, after which the narrative moves away from Helm. Mido does not undergo a significant personal arc; she remains a steady, unchanging presence of compassion and practicality. Her notable ability lies not in any supernatural skill but in her capacity for empathy and her willingness to shelter strangers, qualities that fundamentally shape the early lives of Maquia and Ariel.
