Description
Chito is one of the two protagonists who travels through the ruins of an unnamed, high-tech megacity following an unknown apocalypse that has nearly eradicated humanity. She is a young, petite girl with black hair typically tied in two pigtails and is seldom seen without her Brodie helmet. Her calm and composed demeanor often serves as a counterbalance to the more spontaneous and free-spirited nature of her companion, Yuuri.

Chito's background is one of hardship. Orphaned and unable to remember her parents, she was looked down upon in her hometown before being taken care of by an elderly man she calls Grandfather. When another war broke out, he forced her and Yuuri to flee the settlement, sending them through a pipe storehouse to begin their journey toward the city's highest layers.

Personality-wise, Chito is pragmatic, thoughtful, and serves as the voice of reason for the duo. She is an avid bookworm with a deep love for literature and a strong drive to collect any books she finds during her travels. She is literate in the contemporary writing system of her world, but cannot read older scripts such as kanji or the Latin alphabet. To document her experiences, she keeps a personal journal, reflecting her introspective and documenting nature. Despite her intellectual curiosity, she is not without her fears; Chito suffers from acrophobia, a fear of heights, and is also a poor swimmer.

Her role in the story is fundamentally tied to survival and exploration. She is the primary driver of the duo's modified Kettenkrad vehicle and is notably skilled with her hands and adept at handling machinery. Unlike Yuuri, Chito does not carry a gun, stating she has no need for one, though she sometimes assists by spotting targets for Yuuri during practice. Her main motivation is to follow the advice of her Grandfather and reach the topmost layer of the immense, abandoned city.

The central and most defining relationship in Chito's life is with Yuuri, whom she affectionately calls Yuu. While she is often troubled by Yuuri's carefree and innocent actions, she fundamentally values her as a close friend and indispensable companion. Their dynamic is one of mutual reliance; Chito provides the plan, literacy, and mechanical know-how, while Yuuri offers a different kind of strength and a focus on immediate pleasures like food and warmth.

Chito undergoes subtle but significant development throughout the journey. Her initial obsessive need to preserve every book she finds eventually succumbs to the harsh necessities of survival, forcing her to burn her cherished collection, including her journal, for warmth. This act highlights a growing pragmatism that tempers her sentimentality. Her key abilities are practical rather than combative: superior literacy, mechanical skill, and the ability to operate their primary vehicle, the Kettenkrad.
