Description
Hiro, also known by his code number Code:016, is the main protagonist of the narrative. He was once celebrated as a prodigy among the children raised to pilot the giant mecha known as FRANXX, showing great promise and natural talent. However, by the time the story begins, he has become a dropout pilot cadet, having lost his ability to synchronize with a partner and unable to pilot a FRANXX, which has left him deeply insecure about his own worth and place in the world.
Physically, Hiro is depicted with a slim build and shaggy dark hair, complemented by expressive blue eyes. As the narrative progresses, his body begins to undergo a striking transformation. Following his successful piloting sessions with Zero Two, a blue, tumor-like mark appears on his chest before eventually healing into a scar. Later, his canine teeth become more pronounced, and most notably, small blue horns begin to grow from his forehead. These physical changes are signs of saurification, a process where he becomes more like the non-human creatures called klaxosaurs. In the final stages of his journey, his horns grow longer, his eyes take on a luminous blue hue, and his overall appearance shifts to fully reflect his hybrid nature.
Hiro's personality has undergone a significant evolution. In his childhood, he was a jovial, hopeful, and curious leader among his peers. He was the one who gave personal names, like Ichigo and Goro, to the other children who were only known by their codes, a gesture that fostered a sense of individual identity and camaraderie. He was also known for asking many questions about the world, frustrating the adults who would never give him answers. After his failure to pilot and the related partial memory loss of his past, his personality became more subdued, serious, and emphatic. He lost much of his curiosity and became despondent, feeling that his life had little purpose if he could not pilot. However, upon reuniting with Zero Two, he rediscovers his inner bravery and tenacity. He becomes intensely determined, willing to risk his life to pilot with her and to protect his friends. His love for Zero Two becomes a central driving force, pushing him to be selfless and to see the person beyond her monstrous reputation.
Hiro's primary motivation is the desire to pilot a FRANXX and to find his purpose. This is initially tied to his self-worth, as he feels useless without the ability to fight. This motivation becomes intrinsically linked to his relationship with Zero Two, as she is the only person with whom he can successfully pilot. As the story unfolds, his motivations expand to include understanding Zero Two, keeping his promise to always be with her, and protecting the family he has found within the 13th Plantation.
Hiro's role in the story is central. He is the stamen, or male pilot, of the FRANXX unit known as Strelizia, which he pilots alongside Zero Two. Their unique and powerful synergy makes them a formidable force against the klaxosaurs. His journey from a failed prodigy to a hero who transcends his humanity is the core of the narrative. He is also the emotional anchor for his squad, often acting as the one who encourages mutual understanding and strengthens their bonds as a found family.
The most significant relationship in Hiro's life is with Zero Two, who affectionately calls him her darling. Their bond is forged in childhood when Hiro, then a curious boy, witnessed a young Zero Two being subjected to painful experiments. He helped her escape, and during their flight, he tasted her blood, which was the catalyst for his saurification and incompatibility with other pilots. They made a promise to be together forever, but were captured and had their memories of each other erased. Upon meeting again as adolescents, they are inexplicably drawn to each other. Hiro is one of the few people not repulsed by her horns and becomes the only male pilot able to survive three rides with her. Their relationship deepens from a symbiotic partnership born of necessity into a profound romantic love, as they work to overcome the tragic misunderstandings and trauma from their past.
Hiro also has deep bonds with the other members of Squad 13, whom he named in their childhood. He shares a close friendship with Ichigo, who has unrequited romantic feelings for him, and Goro, his understanding roommate. His relationship with Mitsuru was initially strained; Mitsuru admired Hiro as a child and they made a promise to pilot together, but Hiro lost all memory of this after his mind was wiped. This perceived betrayal caused Mitsuru to harbor resentment for much of the story, until Hiro finally remembers and apologizes.
Throughout the story, Hiro undergoes a profound development. He begins as a hopeless and insecure young man who has lost his identity. His initial rides with Zero Two reawaken his will to live and fight, and he gradually recovers his erased memories. This recovery restores his lost sense of self, his childhood bravery, and his deep, unwavering commitment to Zero Two. He accepts his physical transformation into a klaxosaur-like being, choosing to fully embrace this new form to stay by Zero Two's side and protect the world. In the final battle against the alien VIRM, he sacrifices himself alongside Zero Two, with their souls later being reincarnated on a future Earth.
Hiro's notable abilities are intrinsically tied to his condition. Initially a prodigy, he lost all ability to pilot a FRANXX with a normal partner, a consequence of ingesting Zero Two's blood in his childhood. This very act, however, made him the only person capable of piloting with Zero Two, as his body had become compatible with her klaxosaur biology. As his saurification progresses, he gains enhanced physical and mental connections with Zero Two, allowing for a perfect synergy within Strelizia. His transformation ultimately grants him abilities beyond a normal human, such as regenerating wounds, and he becomes a key figure in the final battle against VIRM, piloting the transformed Strelizia Apas. His most defining ability is not a physical power but his extraordinary will and love, which enable him to overcome the parasitic side effects of piloting and pull Zero Two back from the brink of losing herself.
