Description
Hector Doyle is a fictional character appearing in the Baki manga and anime series. He is a British national who stands 185 centimeters tall and weighs approximately 85 kilograms. Doyle is one of five death row inmates who simultaneously escape from maximum security prisons around the world, each driven by the same singular desire to experience defeat in combat. Prior to his incarceration, he worked as an assassin and mercenary, though the specific crimes that led to his death sentence are not detailed. Doyle was slated to die in the electric chair, but he survived the execution and overwhelmed the guards overseeing the procedure. Following his escape, he travels to Tokyo, where the strongest fighters in the world are known to gather.

Doyle possesses a complex and somewhat contradictory personality that distinguishes him from the other escaped convicts. He is generally calm and shows emotion infrequently, often displaying only small, confident smiles. Despite his background as a killer, he is frequently described as the most humane or decent of the five death row inmates. Unlike his fellow convicts who attack civilians without hesitation, Doyle demonstrates a surprising level of common sense and restraint. When he broke into a school to confront the protagonist, he only knocked out the teacher who spoke to him rather than causing serious harm. While shopping at a convenience store, he paid for his items, a sharp contrast to another inmate who killed a clerk for food. During a potential confrontation in a crowded shopping mall, Doyle himself suggested that fighting in a public place with many civilians would be difficult, indicating an awareness of collateral damage that his counterparts lack. However, this does not make him harmless; after receiving medical treatment from a martial arts dojo, he expressed gratitude and apology before deliberately destroying the building with an explosive dust device, showing that his sense of duty or mission overrides his polite demeanor.

Doyle's motivations are tied directly to the core premise of his story arc. His stated reason for escaping prison and traveling to Japan is to know defeat, as he has grown discontented with his constant winning streak and the inability of any opponent to truly best him. This desire drives all of his actions throughout the narrative.

His role in the story is that of an antagonist who engages in combat with multiple fighters from the underground arena. Unlike some other convicts who target specific individuals, Doyle fights a broad range of opponents, arguably making him the most active of the death row inmates in terms of direct confrontations. He challenges Baki Hanma at his school, ambushes the powerful fighter Biscuit Oliva while disguised as a policewoman, and battles Kosho Shinogi, Retsu Kaioh, Doppo Orochi, and Katsumi Orochi in succession.

His key relationships are defined by these battles, and they evolve significantly over time. His fight with Retsu Kaioh is particularly notable. Although Retsu defeats him severely using a variety of Chinese martial arts weapons, Doyle later loses consciousness while protecting an unconscious Retsu from common thugs who were trying to rob him. He guarded Retsu in this vulnerable state until morning, an act of unexpected honor that led Retsu to carry the wounded Doyle back to his dojo for treatment. His most transformative relationship, however, develops with Katsumi Orochi. After destroying the Shinshinkai dojo, Doyle is repeatedly knocked unconscious by an enraged Katsumi. Through these relentless beatings, Doyle refuses to admit defeat, and his perseverance earns Katsumi's respect. Eventually, Doyle finally acknowledges his loss by removing his jacket and placing it at Katsumi's feet. Following this admission, the two become friends, with Katsumi teaching Doyle karate techniques and bestowing upon him a black belt.

Doyle undergoes significant character development that culminates in a genuine redemption arc. Starting as an assassin who used any means necessary to achieve victory and who had never known defeat, he gradually learns humility through his losses. The defeat he sought becomes a transformative experience, leaving him with what is described as the joy of being unexpectedly freed. He sincerely attempts to leave his criminal life behind, with Katsumi helping him board a ship to start anew in the Middle East.

This development is cut short when he is ambushed on the ship by fellow inmate Ryuko Yanagi, who attacks Doyle for abandoning his pride as a killer. Yanagi blinds Doyle in his remaining eye, leaving him sightless. Doyle fights back, using the black belt Katsumi gave him as a weapon, and manages to escape by falling into the sea. After being rescued and recaptured, he is imprisoned in a facility for the disabled.

Doyle's notable abilities are rooted in surgical modifications made to his body. He has metal blades implanted into his joints, including his wrists, palms, kneecaps, and heels, which are controlled by a spring system connected to the nerves in his fingers. He also possesses a neural velocity reactor attached to his heart that enhances his strength and controls the deployment of his blades. A bomb is strapped to his chest beneath his shirt, set to detonate upon physical contact and also linked to his nervous system. Additionally, a switch in his ring finger allows his arm to shoot forward with tremendous speed and force, capable of caving in an opponent's face. Doyle is highly durable, having survived electrocution, massive blood loss, and repeated brutal attacks from multiple world-class fighters. He is also resourceful, able to turn ordinary objects into weapons, as shown when he slashed an opponent with the sharp end of a stiletto heel.
