TV-Series
Description
Drift is an Autobot bounty hunter who appears in the Transformers: Robots in Disguise animated series. His approach to his work is relatively rare among bounty hunters, as he operates with a strong conscience. He is dedicated to hunting down wrongdoers across the galaxy with the specific goal of bringing them in fairly and rehabilitating them into productive members of Cybertronian society.
Drift has a complex personal history that informs his present identity. In the past, he was a homeless bot forced to steal energon, which eventually led him to join the Decepticon army under the name Deadlock. After nearly being destroyed in battle, he was found and repaired by the Circle of Light, who taught him the ways of the samurai. This training had a lasting impact on his philosophy and fighting style. He later joined a bounty hunter group called the Ronin, but left them after they demonstrated a complete lack of conscience, an act that involved destroying their vessel to prevent them from destroying a moon.
Personality wise, Drift is an exacting perfectionist who adheres to an unbending and rigid honor code. He follows this code to the letter, a level of strictness that even the rule-focused Autobot Strongarm finds excessive. Drift is often blunt and dismissive, and he rarely offers praise. This characteristic frequently leaves his two Mini-Con students, Slipstream and Jetstorm, feeling unappreciated, though they remain loyal to him because he helped lift them out of difficult circumstances.
In the story, Drift first arrives on Earth intending to collect a bounty on Bumblebee. However, he arrives at the same time as his rival, a Decepticon bounty hunter named Fracture. Drift gets the better of Fracture, and when Bumblebee provides assistance, Drift insists he now owes a life debt and begins protecting him. This initially creates some friction, as his method of following Bumblebee everywhere wears thin. His rigid views on honor are challenged when Bumblebee points out that there is more to it than Drift's narrow interpretation, leading to a shift in his perspective. After Fracture is ultimately defeated, Drift is released from his life debt but chooses not to pursue the bounty on Bumblebee, acknowledging that Bumblebee has proven himself honorable. Later, Jetstorm leaves Drift's tutelage before being found again on Earth. After a mission where Drift is forced to rely on his student's unconventional plan, he is humbled and decides to remain on Earth with Bumblebee's team for a time so he can learn more about teamwork.
Key relationships define much of his role. He is the teacher and mentor to Slipstream and Jetstorm, two Mini-Cons who ride on his arms. Their relationship is strained by his perfectionism but is ultimately built on a foundation of loyalty and his having saved them from a life of crime. Jetstorm, in particular, is more impulsive and creative than Drift, which creates friction but also allows for growth. Fracture serves as his primary rival, a fellow bounty hunter who does not share Drift's honor or conscience and is eager to destroy him. His relationship with Bumblebee evolves from that of a hunter and his prey to one of respect and mutual support.
In terms of development, Drift undergoes a notable arc from a solitary, rigidly isolated bounty hunter to a more flexible member of a team. His initial strict adherence to his code is softened as he learns from Bumblebee and, surprisingly, from the human Russell Clay, who defends Jetstorm and teaches Drift a lesson about humility and the value of different perspectives. He transitions from a loner focused on repaying a debt to an active, if still somewhat aloof, member of Bumblebee's Autobot team.
Regarding his abilities, Drift is an expert in blade combat, typically eschewing ranged weapons like blasters in favor of up-close sword fighting. His weaponry includes a longsword and a short sword. He allows his Mini-Cons to handle outside distractions while he focuses directly on his primary target. His vehicle alternate mode is a futuristic orange car.
