Description
Once Cybertron's most feared pirate, Hammerstrike is a Decepticon-aligned Sharkticon who appears in the Transformers: Robots in Disguise animated series from 2015. His defining characteristic is a profound and deeply held contempt for anything above the waves. Pretty much everything about dry land offends him, and being forced to even set foot on it is considered a grievous insult. He is willing to tolerate the experience of being on land only to further his own plans, and he complains bitterly about having the stink of a land-dweller on him the entire time.
Hammerstrike's primary motivation upon arriving on Earth is to terraform the planet's oceans into an environment more suitable for himself. After being freed from his stasis pod when the prison ship Alchemor crashed, he immediately took to Earth's waterways. Intending to turn the sea into something approximating his home, he attacked an oil tanker called the Windward. His plan was to release a massive oil spill, correctly believing that the viscous liquid would increase the viscosity of the water, creating a slipperier, heavier environment similar to the seas of Cybertron.
His role in the story is that of a self-interested and powerful threat, though he is ultimately a one-time adversary. He confronts the Autobot team, specifically Bumblebee and Grimlock, when they come to defend the oil tanker. Although he is initially fought off, he refuses to give up and instead heads to a nearby oil refinery, hoping to achieve his goal there. The Autobots pursue him, leading to a final confrontation. Despite his combat skills, he is eventually outmaneuvered; through teamwork, Bumblebee and Grimlock manage to push Hammerstrike into a massive empty oil drum, after which Grimlock delivers a solid punch before the pirate is sealed inside a stasis pod. His stasis pod was later taken back to Cybertron by Optimus Prime, Windblade, and Ratchet.
Key relationships in the episode are defined by this conflict. He serves as a direct and physical antagonist to the Autobot leader Bumblebee and the Dinobot Grimlock. Grimlock's attempt to fight Hammerstrike in the water proves ineffective, as Grimlock cannot swim, highlighting Hammerstrike's dominance in his preferred environment. Their fight shifts to a land-based oil refinery, where the slippery surface levels the playing field.
In terms of development, Hammerstrike is a static character whose personality and goals are clearly established from his introduction to his defeat. He does not undergo a significant change or redemption arc. His hatred of dry land remains his sole driving force, and his defeat comes not from a change of heart, but from being physically trapped.
Hammerstrike possesses several notable abilities. In the water or any viscous liquid, he is an absolute terror, demonstrating incredible speed and agility in his submarine alternate mode, where he strikes his targets quick and hard. Despite his hatred of land-based combat, he is an effective fighter on his feet as well. This is especially true if there is some kind of slippery fluid on the ground, as he is able to skate effortlessly on the surface while his opponents struggle for balance. He belongs to the Sharkticon subspecies, which are known for being fond of water and having submersible alternate modes.
