TV-Series
Description
Belial is a central antagonist and the initial leader of the Seven Mortal Sins, bearing the title of Demon Lord of Vanity, also referred to as the sin of Vainglory or Falsehood. She is a striking figure with long silver hair typically tied back, and her most distinctive feature is her heterochromia: her left eye is ruby red while her right eye is golden yellow. Small, asymmetrical horns protrude from her head, with one noticeably longer than the other. Her revealing attire consists primarily of armored shoulder plates, black lace undergarments, stockings, and mismatched ballet shoes and gloves, reflecting the series' aesthetic.

Her background is defined by a profound fall from grace. Belial was originally an angel named Israfil who belonged to a high order in Heaven. Her downfall came from a presumptuous attempt to serve God; she appeared directly before humans to prove the divine existence and gather more followers. This act backfired catastrophically, as the humans instead succumbed to the Seven Mortal Sins. For this blunder, she was banished from Heaven and fell to Hell. There, she is a member of the prestigious Byrnedale clan, a fact in which she takes immense pride. Her status as a fallen angel shapes her entire identity, as she is a former celestial being who became a demon.

In keeping with her title, Belial is exceedingly egotistical and arrogant. She believes herself to be the most elegant and beautiful being in all of Hell, constantly boasting about her noble lineage and high rank among the Mortal Sins. Her vanity makes her prone to overestimating her own capabilities, as she often boasts beyond her actual power and becomes grandiose when she has the advantage. However, even in defeat, she remains defiant and refuses to show weakness, maintaining a facade of confidence. She holds a deep-seated grudge against Lucifer, the series' protagonist, for reasons tied to their shared history and the politics of Hell.

Belial's primary motivation is to reclaim her former glory and assert her dominance over Hell. She resents Lucifer and schemes to overthrow her, aiming to secure her position as the supreme ruler of the underworld. Her vanity is not merely about appearance but about status, power, and legacy; she wishes to restore her family's name and prove her superiority over her rivals. This ambition drives her to desperate measures, including making a treacherous pact with the archangel Michael. Belial agrees to deliver Lucifer to Heaven for eternal torment in exchange for the release of all souls in Hell and an exemption from a planned divine purge, revealing that she is willing to betray her own kind for personal salvation and power.

In the story's narrative, Belial serves as the primary antagonist of the first half and the leader of the Seven Mortal Sins. She is the one who, after Lucifer's initial fall, bands the other Demon Lords together to strip the former archangel of her angelic powers, sealing them with a cursed garment. Later, she orchestrates a plot to capture the human girl Maria Totsuka, using her as bait to lure Lucifer into a trap. For this confrontation, she forges a temporary alliance with Satan, the Demon Lord of Wrath, and Beelzebub, the Demon Lord of Gluttony, to fight against Lucifer and even manages to temporarily seal Lucifer's power.

Her key relationships are marked by ambition and manipulation. Her primary dynamic is a bitter rivalry with Lucifer, whom she both envies and seeks to destroy. She holds a leadership position over the other Sins, but this authority is often tenuous, as she does not command their genuine loyalty or trust. The notable exception is Astaroth, who is unique among the other Sins for her unwavering and inexplicable admiration and loyalty towards Belial. Belial's most significant alliance is a secret and treacherous one with Michael, the archangel who cast Lucifer out of Heaven, demonstrating her willingness to collude with her former celestial kin against the denizens of Hell.

Throughout the series, Belial is depicted as a schemer whose plans consistently backfire, leading to a notable losing streak against Lucifer. Her development reveals her as a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none" – possessing considerable pride, combat ability, and sex appeal, yet unable to surpass the specialists like Lucifer, Satan, or Asmodeus. Her ultimate act of treachery, the deal with Michael, defines her character arc, showing that her vanity and desire for self-preservation outweigh any loyalty to her demonic subjects. When her betrayal is exposed, she loses the support of most of the other Sins, isolating her further.

Regarding abilities, Belial is a formidable combatant whose power is augmented by unique equipment. Her primary asset is Gnosis, a sentient, skeletal, four-legged creature that attaches to her and serves as both her living armor and a source of power. Her right pauldron is decorated with Gnosis's face, and a claw-like arm extends from it for her to wield in battle. She also originally possessed Dáinsleif, a demonic family sword passed down through the Byrnedale clan. This cursed blade was said to possess its own will, refusing to return to its scabbard until its enemy was dead, though it was ultimately destroyed by Lucifer. Her power is such that she can, in concert with other Demon Lords, temporarily seal Lucifer's angelic abilities.
