TV-Series
Description
Kirako Haruno is a minor supporting character in Bungo Stray Dogs, primarily known for her work as an office clerk and secretary at the Armed Detective Agency. Her role is largely administrative, providing support to the field agents from behind the scenes. Information about her life before joining the agency is not detailed, but she appears to have been a member for some time and is on friendly terms with her colleagues, particularly Naomi Tanizaki, with whom she shares a close working relationship.

In terms of appearance, Haruno is a young woman with short, half-curly brown hair that falls just below her shoulders. She has olive green eyes and typically wears a pair of large, red-rimmed glasses. Her work attire, similar to other clerical staff, consists of a white buttoned shirt with a white bow tie, a grey vest, and a long navy blue skirt. On other occasions, she has been seen in more casual clothing such as a dark turtleneck sweater with a long white skirt.

Haruno possesses a personality that balances professionalism with a more relaxed personal side. At work, she is portrayed as friendly, helpful, and reliable. However, outside of the office environment, her interactions with Naomi suggest she can be somewhat prone to slacking off when not being watched and is easily startled. Despite this, she has demonstrated a capacity for composure under pressure. When confronted by the Guild members John Steinbeck and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, she was able to remain calm enough to drive a vehicle to safety, even though she was visibly frightened.

One of Haruno's most defining personal traits is her deep affection for cats. She has a cat named Mi-chan, for whom she has a strong fondness, and this obsession makes her an easy target for good-natured teasing from her coworkers. Additionally, there are hints that she may have a significant fondness for alcohol, as Naomi once mentioned that Haruno drank five entire bottles of wine in a single night. Her priorities can sometimes seem unusual; during a dangerous situation when the agency was under attack, she showed more immediate concern for her personal belongings like a bottle of wine and a curling iron than for the immediate peril, much to Naomi's exasperation.

Haruno's role in the story is that of a non-combatant support character. She is often seen handling office duties, such as serving tea to the agency's president, Yukichi Fukuzawa. During the Port Mafia Arc, she was present when a bomber took Naomi hostage, observing the event as a test for the new member Atsushi Nakajima. Her most significant involvement occurs during the Guild Arc, where she and Naomi are forced to flee from their safehouse when it is attacked. In this sequence, she takes on the role of the driver, using her calm demeanor to navigate their escape despite being pursued by enemy ability users. Although they are captured by Steinbeck's vine-based ability, they are eventually rescued by their colleagues. Her concern for Mi-chan also plays into the narrative during the Cannibalism Arc, where she believes the cat's disappearance is an omen of misfortune for the President.

Her key relationship is with Naomi Tanizaki, her partner-in-training and close friend. The two are frequently seen together, and their dynamic reveals much about Haruno's personality, as Naomi often has to keep her focused on work or pull her away from distractions. She is also respectful of the agency's president and maintains cordial, if less deeply explored, relationships with the other detectives like Atsushi Nakajima, whom she ultimately forgives for attacking her while he was under the influence of a cursed ability.

Haruno does not possess any notable supernatural abilities or combat skills. Her value to the Armed Detective Agency lies entirely in her clerical and secretarial work, making her an integral part of the organization's daily operations even though she does not participate in dangerous missions. She appears more prominently in the anime adaptation than she does in the original manga; in the anime, she is given the specific role of the president's secretary and is introduced earlier, during Atsushi's entrance exam, whereas her first appearance in the manga occurs later, in the sixth volume. Her name is a literary reference to a character in Junichiro Tanizaki's novel Naomi, which is fitting given the series' tradition of naming characters after literary figures.
