Description
Suguha Kirigaya, known in virtual worlds as Leafa, is a central supporting character in Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale. Her background begins as the cousin of Kazuto Kirigaya, though she was raised alongside him as his younger sister. To shield Kazuto from their grandfather’s disappointment when he quit, Suguha became a dedicated and highly skilled kendo practitioner, training for many years. In the movie, which takes place after the Fairy Dance and Phantom Bullet arcs, the setting shifts from full-dive virtual reality to augmented reality through the Augma device and its game Ordinal Scale. For the first time in the series, Suguha participates in the story primarily as her real-world self rather than through her Leafa avatar, highlighting her genuine presence in the real world alongside the other characters.

Personality-wise, Suguha is hard-working, athletic, and emotionally straightforward. She is cheerful and more socially outgoing than her brother, but she can be sensitive, especially regarding her complicated feelings for him. She is determined and loyal, with a strong sense of justice, and she loves speed and the sensation of flying, a trait carried from her in-game persona. Her primary motivation in Ordinal Scale is to support and protect Kazuto and his friends. When she learns that Asuna and other SAO survivors are losing their memories due to the Augma’s hidden functions, she does not hesitate to assist. She helps Kirito improve his real-world sword skills through kendo practice, enabling him to fight effectively in the augmented reality battles.

Her role in the story is that of a steadfast ally and a grounded anchor to reality. While many main characters are former SAO survivors directly affected by the memory theft, Suguha provides a perspective from outside that trauma, yet she is deeply invested in the well-being of those involved. She joins the climactic battle at Tokyo National Stadium, fighting alongside Kirito, Asuna, and the others against the Aincrad bosses that appear in the augmented world. She contributes her real-world combat training and her virtual avatar’s capabilities when the group enters the hidden full-dive mode.

Key relationships include her bond with Kazuto Kirigaya, which is marked by sisterly care underpinned by past romantic confusion that she has resolved into a supportive familial role. Her friendship with Asuna is cordial and cooperative, and she works well with the broader group of Kirito’s allies. Her development in this movie is subtle but meaningful: she transitions from a character often seen only within virtual reality to a capable real-world participant, showing that her strength and resolve are not tied to a game. Her notable abilities stem from her eight years of kendo training, giving her quick reflexes, precise control, and effective sword handling, which she adapts to the Augma’s combat system. In the deeper virtual layers of the game, she retains her Leafa persona’s agility and swordsmanship, including exceptional flying speed and combat instincts.
