Description
Gaelio Bauduin, also known under the alias Vidar, is a central character who undergoes a profound transformation, driven by betrayal and a thirst for revenge. He is born into the Bauduin family, one of the Seven Stars, the highest-ranking noble houses within the Earth-based military organization Gjallarhorn. As the heir to this prestigious family, he holds the rank of特务三佐 and is initially positioned as a privileged and talented officer within the organization's upper echelons.

In his early days, Gaelio is characterized as a talkative, easygoing, and relaxed individual with a sense of humor. He appears more impulsive and irritable than his calm and calculative childhood friend and colleague, McGillis Fareed, and does not always maintain a serious, professional demeanor. He possesses a degree of pride in his abilities and can become annoyed when his skills are questioned. Despite this, he is highly intelligent and capable of critical thinking, making him a competent inspector who does not easily trust others. He treats his subordinates with respect, as demonstrated when he takes Ein Dalton under his wing, valuing Ein's loyalty and desire for vengeance. Following his apparent death and rebirth as Vidar, his personality shifts dramatically. In this masked guise, he becomes a mysterious, reclusive, and silent individual, speaking only when necessary and hiding his emotions behind a cold exterior. His primary driving force becomes a cold, focused need for revenge, and he dedicates himself entirely to this goal, throwing aside his true identity in the process. After revealing his survival to the world, he loses much of his former easygoing nature, replaced by a serious, determined, and almost solemn demeanor, though his core sense of honor remains.

Gaelio's role in the story begins as a well-intentioned but somewhat naive inspector for Gjallarhorn, sent to Mars on a mission that brings him into conflict with the private security company turned revolutionary group, Tekkadan. He pilots the ancient Gundam Kimaris, a family heirloom, in his efforts to stop them. His life is shattered when his closest friend, McGillis, betrays him during a key battle, seemingly killing him and revealing a long-held plan to seize control of Gjallarhorn. Presumed dead and cremated, the severely injured Gaelio survives and is secretly taken in by Rustal Elion, the commander of Gjallarhorn's powerful Arianrhod Fleet. He adopts the masked identity of Vidar, named after his new custom Gundam, and becomes a key agent for Rustal in the looming civil war against McGillis's faction. His ultimate goal is to confront McGillis, understand his true intentions, and exact revenge for the betrayal and the deaths of their mutual friend, Carta Issue, and the loyal Ein Dalton. He plays a pivotal role in the final battle, publicly revealing his identity, declaring his intent to destroy the traitor McGillis, and personally confronting his former friend to bring an end to the conflict.

His key relationships define his entire arc. His bond with McGillis Fareed is the most significant; they are childhood friends and allies whose relationship sours into bitter enmity after McGillis's betrayal. His loyalty to his subordinate Ein Dalton is another cornerstone; he is horrified when Ein is turned into a cyborg after sustaining injuries while protecting him, and he later carries Ein's legacy, using the Alaya-Vijnana Type E system developed from Ein's brain to enhance his own piloting abilities. This system allows him to use the power of the Alaya-Vijnana without physical harm by using Ein's brain as a proxy. He also forms a working relationship with Julieta Juris, a pilot in the Arianrhod Fleet, acting as a mentor figure who understands her feelings of loyalty and pride. His younger sister, Almiria Bauduin, is another important figure in his life, as she is tragically used in the political machinations between him and McGillis, being engaged to marry his treacherous friend.

Gaelio demonstrates significant development over the course of the narrative. He begins as an idealistic and somewhat arrogant noble who looks down on Tekkadan and the Alaya-Vijnana system. After his betrayal and "rebirth" as Vidar, he becomes an embittered, single-minded avenger. However, by the story's end, after confronting McGillis and achieving his revenge, he evolves further, showing a profound change in perspective. He apologizes to Mikazuki Augus, a Tekkadan pilot with the Alaya-Vijnana system, for his previous prejudiced behavior, indicating he has abandoned his old classist views. He comes to represent a version of Gjallarhorn that must confront and cleanse its own corruption, seeking not just vengeance but a form of justice and order. Following the final battle, he is depicted as being bound to a wheelchair due to his accumulated injuries, but he is alive and at peace, having fulfilled his purpose.

Gaelio is a highly skilled mobile suit pilot, though his early style is noted for being somewhat impulsive compared to the more tactical McGillis. His signature ability, which he gains as Vidar, is the use of the Alaya-Vijnana Type E system. This revolutionary system connects his mobile suit to the preserved brain of his fallen comrade Ein Dalton. When activated, it grants him the lightning-fast reflexes and direct machine control of a true Alaya-Vijnana user without requiring him to undergo the dangerous surgery or suffer the physical strain and bodily alterations typically associated with it, such as the need for spinal implants. This system, housed within his Gundam Vidar and later its successor, the Gundam Kimaris Vidar, allows him to fight on equal terms with even the most powerful pilots of Tekkadan, making him one of the most formidable combatants in the series.
