Description
Hayate, whose full name is Azuma Hayate, is a supporting character in the 2017 anime series. He is a 22-year-old young man who stands exceptionally tall at 190 centimeters, with black hair and a birthday on May 1st. In his daily life, he works as a new employee at a major food corporation, where he serves as a subordinate to his senior colleague, Chizuru. Because of his considerable height, people who do not know them often mistakenly assume that Hayate is the superior, a misunderstanding that visibly irritates Chizuru. Hayate is a Hand Shaker, which means he forms a bonded pair with a partner to fight in an alternate dimension known as the Ziggurat, though his motivations for participating in these battles are tied to his relationship with Chizuru rather than a personal ambition for the granted wish.

In terms of personality, Hayate is depicted as a relaxed, easygoing, and good-natured young man. His demeanor is often described as adorably awkward, presenting a calm and somewhat laid-back exterior in contrast to his partner's more sarcastic and critical nature. Despite his gentle disposition, he is a dedicated and hardworking individual who takes pride in his role as Chizuru's follower, expressing a strong commitment to support her. Their dynamic is characterized by lighthearted bickering, but it is clear that a deep mutual affection and respect exist between them; his actions are consistently driven by a desire to protect her and follow her lead.

Hayate’s primary role in the story is that of a rival who quickly becomes an ally to the main protagonists, Tazuna and Koyori. He and Chizuru initially appear as antagonists, challenging the main duo in a battle within the Ziggurat. However, upon learning about Koyori’s fragile health and the potentially fatal consequences of their fight, they are horrified and immediately regret their actions. Their defeat leads to a significant shift in their role. Rather than holding a grudge, Hayate and Chizuru offer their assistance to Tazuna and Koyori, agreeing to act as mentors and provide guidance on how to navigate the world of Hand Shakers. This transition from enemy to teacher marks a key part of their narrative function. They help the protagonists choose a team name and offer practical advice, such as warning them against constantly holding hands in public, as it would immediately identify them as a Hand Shaker pair.

Hayate undergoes a subtle but clear development through his experiences. While he begins as a relatively straightforward opponent, his defeat serves as a catalyst for introspection. The battle forces him and Chizuru to confront their own emotions, leading them to openly acknowledge their disappointment and vulnerability with one another. This moment adds a layer of emotional depth to his character, showing a capacity for growth and humility. Rather than being defined solely by combat, his development is seen in his willingness to set aside his pride and adopt a cooperative and supportive role for the protagonists' sake.

Regarding his abilities as a Hand Shaker, Hayate fights in tandem with his partner Chizuru. Together, they form a formidable duo whose teamwork is a testament to their strong bond. While specific details of his individual powers are not extensively detailed, he operates with a chain-like weapon, and the pair is known for their coordinated, combined attacks, which they refer to as their "Blade Shadow" techniques. Their fighting style and his ability to support Chizuru in battle reflect his overall character as a follower and a protector, leveraging his physical stature and dedication to ensure their success as a team.
